This is as cheap as buying a new smoke alarm battery!

Many fire services not only provide them free of charge but fit them also. In addition they give you lots of advice and it's all free.

ciaozammer - it's not about the money - that's a bonus - its the possible life saving advice that the firefighters give you that's important.

The fire service are only two pleased to fit them for you, My mum had them fitted this year for free, whilst she is a pensioner they also will fit in peoples homes who arent pensioners. The fire service isnt just about putting fires out but also about prevention.

Kidde alarms are meant to be one of the best, I am after a Kiddee carbon monoxide alarm cheap

You can get fire alarm for free just ring your local fire brigades

It beggars belief why people can afford booze, fags, clothes, social life, electrical bargains etc. but never stop and think about their own / families safety by NOT having a smoke detector.

For god's sake it's 3 and a half quid odd in exchange for your life!!!

Personally I think as part of a house buyer's seller's pack they could have passed a law that states that you have to have a working smoke detector before you can sell or buy a house. It might save lives along the way.

Anyone who hasn't got smoke detector(s) - shame on you!

Problem is, a lot of places have smoke alarms but people remove them for kids toys etc and forget to put them back.

Doesn't help that smoke alarm batteries are relatively expensive. (Four quid a shot soon adds up if you have a detector in each room, as recommended)

Fire stations should give away free batteries..at the very least the government could make them VAT free.

in cheshire we fit as many smoke alarms as you need with ten yes ten year batteries for free, the batteries are totaly sealed in so you can not remove them, they also do not fit anything else (the batteries that is) just contact your local station or your local brigade web site for details http://www.cheshirefire.co.uk/publicsafety.asp?menuid=632

I was told that you only need one per floor and additional alarms in rooms with bunk/cabin beds, so we got 4 fitted (free of charge) from local fire brigade.

In addition we got advice (close doors on nights, to stop spread of fire, make sure keys are kept in a set place so you know where they are at any time, etc...)

Big fan of the fire brigade (fortunately I've never needed to use them).
