Voted cold.

Just added one to my basket and shows up at £205.61

Items: GBP 165.40
Shipping & Handling: GBP 13.39

Total Before Tax: GBP 205.61
Estimated Tax:* GBP 0.00
Import Fees Deposit GBP 26.82
Order Total: GBP 205.61

Although, pre-paying the Import Fees (as Amazon make you do) means you save on the ridiculous £8 admin fee Royal Mail charge.

was dubious when my wife bought it for anniversary, but it is an awesome gadget
you can put load of free books on it, only downside is most of the Kindle books are US but that will get better in time

I would love one too. However, the 6" global version looks naff in my opinion. I would much prefer the larger screen, which as I understand it is only available in the USA? :- (

The price is also very expensive.

Would it be cheaper to invest in a similar Sony Reader?

Just found this:

http://www.gaj-it.com/12589/3g-kindle-coming-to-the-uk-in-just-12-days/

quote: "....Included in each international version of the Kindle is a 3G SIM card that lets you download books right to your Kindle. Amazon are stressing that this SIM card has no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and you don’t need to hunt for Wi-Fi hotspots to download you books. However some keen eyed readers have noticed that the small print for the 3G roaming does mention that “when traveling abroad, you can download books wirelessly from the Kindle Store or your Archived Items for a fee of $1.99.” Abroad means not in the USA, so UK customers will need to pay the extra £1.25 per book.

mumbojumbo
It's not pre-paid. It states a "deposit", which covers the £8 handling charge and VAT should the packet be stopped by customs.

Nope, if you work out 15% of the total (including shipping) it equals the exact amount Amazon take from you for the import fee - no sign of the £8 RM fee.

And even though they call it a deposit, it's still pre-payment as they take the amount from you when you place the order and then pass it on to customs. Therefore you don't pay any fees when RM deliver. If you don't get hit by customs (with Amazon you always do though) they'll then refund the amount.

I'm pretty sure that Amazon send the Kindle by courier - and that's the only option for shipping it internationally. In the past when I've ordered other things from them (Amazon US to UK) I've had the option of surface mail, airmail and priority mail, and priority mail was Fedex (or similar). Couriers invariably charge taxes on imports (not much slips through) but their "service fees" tend to be quite a bit lower than the offensive 8 pounds that Royal Mail goes for.
