How are they powered?

The reason I ask is because Yes they could be powered by USB when connecting to a PC, but would need an external power source when connecting via 3.5mm.

Any ideas?

cheap... They might not be. I use an old pair of speakers from my 1st PC and run the wire under the bathroom door from my phone to listen to talksport in the bath.
I've been wrong before though so I'll not rule it out this time either!

Are not mosty headphones 3.5 jack and unpowered? So that would mean it is not going to be the sound levels you need for a party but would be fine for a PC or talksport in the bath. (For some reason that makes me laugh, cannot think why as it is not that absurd!)

Virtually all headphones are passive, but this is a different scale. They may be passive though. I am just asking.

For instance I use a nokia 3.5mm speaker for my n900 which is powered by 2 aa batteries.

I have assumed them to be passive since they are quite small. Time will tell! I ordered them and when they arrive I will try to remember to post back if no one else has said in the meantime.

They have arrived. Small but fine for the PC. I connected the second speaker (the one with no USB) and attached it to my iPOD - It is a 1st gen so has no speakers of its own. I could listen to my music but not much else. Perfect to not annoy colleagues but no good for them to listen to my fantastic tunes at their desks.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

So it is a passive speaker then?

Cheers OP, ordered a set for in the garage.

Thanks.

I think one of them is active (why else the need for 5V from the USB?), the other is passive.

Will order I think.
