Based on a story by author Ryne Douglas Pearson, KNOWING is a moody sci-fi thriller starring Nicolas Cage as John Koestler, a widowed MIT astrophysicist who lives in wooded seclusion with his young son, Caleb (Chandler Canterbury). When Caleb is handed an envelope unearthed from a school time capsule buried 50 years earlier, its cryptic numerical sequence captures the interest of his dad, who soon realises the powerful significance of the document, which seems to predict major world disasters throughout history. Unfortunately, there are three calamities that have yet to unfold, and John, aided reluctantly by single mother Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne) and her daughter, Abby (Lara Robinson), must try to unravel the mystery of the numbers before many more lives are lost.

Alex Proyas's follow-up to 2004's I, ROBOT, returns to the shadowy atmosphere of the director's revered cult film, DARK CITY, while staying within the realm of the Hollywood big-budget disaster movie. Though the plot takes some outlandish turns, the film is grounded by solid performances from Cage, Byrne, and the impressive child actors, and Proyas further anchors the proceedings in moments of captivatingly bleak realism. Like the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, KNOWING is a pensive and melancholy thriller that rewards discerning viewers willing to follow its strange and intriguing tale.

Good movie, BTW movies can be imaginative and have an ending which is not everyone's cup of tea! I enjoyed the movie and its ending. Movie keeps you thinking all along. Good price

You've got to have an open mind and at least two brain cells in your head to enjoy it...

More believeable story than a 'superior being' called 'God' who no-one has proof of yet chooses to believe the hype of religion..................................................................................

I agree icecreamwoman - like so many intelligent films out there.... some people just haven't got the IQ to understand anything more complex than guns/bombs/big screen action films...

These are the same people who don't get Donnie Darko, or Southland Tales... Too clever for them...

There.

I really wouldn't say that this film is overly intelligent, can't really see how you figure that?

SPOILER.....A girl writes down some numbers, predicts tragedies, Nicolas Cage cottons on to this when his kid brings them home, everyone dies apart from (if I remember correctly as it's been a while) two kids because aliens take them away.

Hardly the most taxing scenario to grasp? Was an ok film, nothing special by any means though and just because some people didn't enjoy it I don't think you can accuse them of being stupid? The film is a good concept, but average application IMO.

And maybe if this was written/directed by Richard Kelly, like the 2 movies you have quoted, them this would have been much better. Having said that though...I've heard mixed reviews about The Box, and he also did write the screenplay or Domino...so even he is a bit hit and miss!

Apart from that, there's no need to be a movie snob. Believe it or not, its not always a case of people not being clever enough to appreciate a movie, in some cases, the movie is just s**t. Simple as.

Exactly - you can't assume that because people didn't like this movie they're stupid. It was a very inconsistent movie with average acting and a plot that amounted to zero.

Also bringing in a criticism of religion in order to reinforce your belief in the quality of this film is somewhat ironic as I found it to be pseudo-Christian in its message. I could just as easily start attacking America or 4x4 cars or rabbits as evidence that this movie was bad. Why bring religion into a discussion about film?

Still, I'm glad people enjoyed it as I was really disappointed (but I guess you already got that impression).

it wasnt that bad. special effects were good, like the plane crash

As said above,
amazing film but the last 10-20 min are a load of s***

A really, REALLY interesting idea, but quite a poor film in the end.

Not on a par with awfulness of Nic Cage in the remake of The Wicker Man though!
