Reading on a tablet isn't the nicest of experiences.
Readers like this are far superior due to the e Ink displays used which will reduce eye strain compared to tablet. Also readable in direct sun unlike most tablets.
Another downside of tablets is the display is the biggest user of battery, so not ideal for reading unless it's just the odd chapter or two.
You can buy books (download free ones too) from the Kobo Store on the device.
Or you can use Calibre to manage it (it's kinda like iTunes but for books).

Here's a tutorial showing you a myriad of options (including Calibre)

Same for me
I think this eink is quite a lot of hype - I have no probs reading books with my tablet (it's HD, less resolution will be worse). The only advantage of ereaders compared to hd tablets is battery life - hours for a tablet, weeks for an ereader (I've got an iriver, and just ordered the Touch, i think the basic Kobo is now OOS). Downloading books from ereaders by default come from one retailer (there are ways around that though) which I find limiting compared to all suppliers being available on tablets (just load the kindle/kobo etc app, or better still, get from the Play store.). If you need long battery life, go with an ereader, if you can manage with a several hour battery life, save some cash and use your tablet (if you find the resolution good enough). My ereader is lighter than my tablet, and has less reflections. Otoh, a tablet does thousands of different things, and an ereader just one.
