Don't think you'll do much better even if you get 2nd hand or refurbished.
Decent quality for what it is

Excellent price, I got this for my Dad recently, paid a bit more than this but well worth it. You get an hdmi cable, batteries and charger with it too which a lot dont come with. Quality was excellent for so little money, incredibly easy to use, you can record and have on the tv literally in seconds.

The only thing is light breezes can sound like gales but I've found that happens in loads of video recorders.

Id recommend getting the remote too, only a tenner but worth it for playback on tv, otherwise you need to sit about 2 feet awayso you can control it.

Great product though, takes still photos too.

I meant to pick up on the low light comment, this isnt the greatest in low light or at night so I wouldnt agree with that.

you can get a cheap enough stereo mic off the bay for under a tenner.

i know someone who got a great sony condensor mic for his video recorder.

These are good. When you connect it to your HD TV the video looks amazing. However, when you burn it to DVD using the software that comes with the camera (which I think is stored in ROM on the camera if memory serves) the resulting quality when played on a DVD player is very poor in my opinion. Has anyone had any success burning DVD's that retain the original quality?

I had to convert the MOV files the camera makes to .MPG to play on my PS3 to keep the high quality.

Extremely easy to use, it has very simple buttons and not to many of them. My children use it all the time, they tell ME how to use it!

I'm pretty sure this camera doesn't let you plug an external mic in. Are you thinking of the Kodak Zi8 that's available from Amazon for £100 right now?

As far as I can see the Zx1 doesn't support external mics though.....

These are good cameras and its a great price but as OP stated, not the cheapest. However these are good for some things but not others... there is no image stabilization on these so I wouldn't recommend for anything like sports etc :)

I had one but sold it when I got my new Panasonic camera.
They are quite good- good image quality. The thing they lack is image stabilisation so you have to hold it very still.
As to editing and showing on DVD. The only way I got very good quality on DVD was to edit via Powerdirector (fully patched to latest build it is great- but earlier builds are buggy so make sure you patch it to latest version when bought), and make an AVCHD disc that played on my Sony Blu Ray player. That was great quality. Obviously if you just make a normal DVD it loses quality.
Editing is difficult due to the format used, and I tried everything- with only Powerdirector coming up consistently with the goods so make sure you get that if you get one of these and want to edit the footage.

Bought one of these about a month ago. Spent ages looking at differant brands and decided to go for the cheaper popular brand. Quite happy with it although wide angle isnt great and you need to stand still to video,oh, and the low light is pretty bad. Battery doesn`t seem to last long.
I still think its worth the money , rather than paying £40 + more for similer items that may not be that much better.
ps remember sdhc card

They're ace, but you have to have a very steady hand

the 2x digital zoom is not smooth either it stutters in & out, also a whirring can be herd on your video when zooming. best not to zoom at all,
sound is not great either due to the mono mic,
the tripod mount thread on the underside is plastic. i wouldv prefered metal thread but not a problem yet.
got mine from pc world for £49.99 ages ago and i love it, because it gives better video than my flip ultrahd, florida in sept will be the test for both.
#28
You can pay 3x and get a Flip Ultra and this, for me anyway, has the edge on quality of image. Sound isn't great but good enough. Steady hand needed yes but not a real issue. Youtube has some great examples of what you can do with these. If the waterproof, this is splash/rainish proof, ever went to this price it would be fantastic. Filmed bits of a concert that had fit inducing strobe lighting and this handled it without a problem.

Don't forget to get an SD memory card with this. Amazon are selling the Bytestor 16GB Class 4 SD card that works perfectly with the Zx1. Costs around 18 squids and you can store around 4 hours of video at the highest HD60 setting.

Still looking Haylhoo? :-) I doubt you will get much better, the £39.97 deal was about the best (with the exception of a douzen or so at the £19.97 and we'll NEVER see that again I doubt! (if we did I'd get another 2! )

On another note, Ive brought 3 of these in the past, one I gave to my sister as a wedding present and I think they are a steal even @ £50! £45 is a good deal and a cool colour ;-)

As mentioned by others you NEED a steady hand, I do fine but it took my sis a while and half a honey moon worth of shakeyness to get a grip on it but once you do its more then bareable... for me at least, you'd have t spend a good £100-150 more for the luxury of half decent anti shake!

As for the comment about sports... with the 60fps option they are great for it so long as you dont need to shake all over the place to keep it pointing where you want...My plan is to strap two to my car (one front one back, or one inside one outside) while I race it round the track! As I said if I had 2 more it'd be even better for that!

Got one of these fours months ago when they were £50 on Amazon, really pleased with it.
In good light the colours and sharpness are stunning.
The low light performance is not bad either, much better than I'd been led to believe.
I've used the built-in software to make a DVD in standard def and although it's poor compared to the full 720p 60fps direct from the camera, it's as good as most standard def video I've seen.
A steady hand is required but that's the trade off with it being so small and light.
I agree you need the optional remote control if you are viewing on TV straight off the camera or you'll be up and down like a strippers knickers.

For the money, the quality and the amount of kit which is included, it is absolute bargain.

I would have thought u can get a much better digital camera for that, stills on this aren't brilliant, comparable to an average mobile.
