Cheers - I agree. Sure the bits and bobs are not super-top quality - but even lower quality branded stuff is good enough for casual users.

Does anyone here know how these compare to Claude Butler?

Its all a bit of a crossover.

Generally you've got Claude Butler, Kona, Marin and Specialised. They all have a vast range from cheap to not cheap. Marins in my experience seem to be slightly more expensive, Claude Butler seems to be slightly cheaper.

Theres not a lot of difference between them, Kona's are known for good ride quality.

From my limited experience I get the impression that Kona is more highly regarded

The BeOne Aspire bikes have better spec than this, for the same prize.

I agree.

The BeAspire is an awesome bike for the money. If I had to choose between the two I would choose the Aspire but I certainly wouldnt be disappointed with this Kona for this money hence my vote hot.

That Kona Blast is an awesome bike. Very fun to ride with and the handling is excellent!

How much and where did you buy from? Stick a couple of slick tyres on that bad boy and it would make a superb town and trail bike!

You forgot Giant, I think they are still the biggest cycle manufacturer globally.

Does anybody know of a good road bike for £300-£400

If you can still find one I'd go for a 2008 Giant SCR3 amazing value for money, should be around £370 (I managed to get one of the last ones luvbikes had at a price match), otherwise if you can stretch to it go for the Giant Defy (around £450 for the basic model).
#15
The Konas great value at £220 and like you say way better than the £99 supermarket specials, but being a Giant fan, I'd try and stretch out another £100 and go for the Yukon, imo the best value sub £400 mtb.

Make that +2 :D

On the Kona side of things yeah - my brother had one a LONG time ago, kona Lava Dome I think it was, then a Cinder Cone or something - more recently 2 other Konas - one around 800 for fun in the woods and one around 200 for a 'station bike'

Don't be fooled by the gimicks and tat on the other bikes in this price range - often it will be useless or even a hindrance.

If only I can give negative rep :x

x3... How about support your opinion rather than just being a troll?

£200 for a bike is nothing when you consider a new car can't be had for under £6,000... It's good for you, better for the environment, fun, and rewarding, and cheaper by a long way...

Hi there! Is this the sort of thing I should be looking for if I wanted it for both riding to work and a bit of fun at w/e on some hills etc? What sort of things should I be looking for in a £300 bike to use for that sort of thing? Cheers Guys! *(bike noob)

Well I got the Kona Blast 07 (new) from Halfords for £360ish. Its been discounted as there are only a few left. If you are interested, I'll give you the product code for them to stock check nearby stores (its not on the website at all).

The Blast 07 and 08 are rare now, because the 09 is more expensive, with a worse spec!

+1 for the Kona are great brigade - lots of fun to ride and very durable in my opinion. I've had a 2002 model for about 6 years and it's still going strong.

Once a well regarded brand, times have changed and Claud Butler falls a wqy behind Kona in terms of quality and the range offered.

Seconding what cycleman said - a Defy 4 will set you back around £475 or for a bit more you can get a Trek 1.2.

Depending on your employer, don't forget the ride to work scheme which could save you about 40% off the cost of a new bike.

Ha ha. I know you shouldn't feed a troll, but I fancied a bit of sport...

I think I paid more VAT on my last bike than an average "road tax" and that's on top of the duty on my car and motorcycle.

I'm sure you actually mean Vehicle Excise Duty anyway, since Churchill abolished Road Tax in 1926...

Lol, what a ****.

What about the people who drive cars exempt from road tax then? ... umm ?

Fool.

Does anyone know how the "Raleigh" series of bikes are? I am looking to get a Raleigh Commuter U1 bike since Halfords have a 50% off sale on them at the moment. I am quite new to the whole cycling thing though, so not sure which brands are good and which ones should be avoided. I am rather wary of buying a sub-150 GBP bike as I am scared it might turn out to be a bad buy a few months down the line!

I just bought a Giant Rainier 2009 Model. It is an amazing bike. RRP £425. I paid £299. There aer a few places about the country offering this price. The bike is light, comfortable, has lockable front suspension and hydraulic discs.

Voting the posted deal hot, but I do believe my bike is a better deal.

Is this the best time of year to get a bike? As 2010 models are released and hence older models are reduced, or is it best to wait for new years sales?

sorry for the noob question.
