Not all diesel cars, sometimes it can depend upon the model refer to this.

Maybe on an old diesel pre 2000 but not on anything more modern usually. I could be wrong but hoses in the engine can rot I read. The government also restrict the mileage you can do without having to pay tax, it's reasonably generous though I believe, unless they've recently changed.

One tank means it should work, sometimes with minimal modifications. Two tank means it needs to be converted, a DIY conversion costs about £150 up to £400-ish for a professional kit.
Been doing it since 2007 and never looked back, if you stock up when it's on special offer you can normally get it for about 70p per litre - so half the price of diesel.
