Police viciously beat a 16-year-old housing estate kid they are questioning, leaving him almost dead. Responding to violence, teenagers from the estate turn their home into a 24 hour war zone. Among the people blinded by hate are Said, Vinz and Hubert, youths who survive on petty crime and dealing dope. In the intensely volatile environment, the teenagers find a chrome-plated Smith & Wesson 44 that a plain-clothes cop has lost. If killing a cop with his own gun doesn't express their rage, what will?

The French cabinet commissioned a special screening of this tragic story on its release, to see the problems of the angry French underclass on the streets of Paris.

The main characters were loathsome, I empathised with the police. The DJ in the high rise was the film's best scene which was done in no time. Other than that there was no hope in the film, as hopeless as life can get there is always an underlying hope that the film makers missed out big time. Some nice cinematography but that's it, the characters all deserved a good kicking in my opinion. Highly over rated film.

you felt sorry for the people who instigated a riot by beating a teenager to death? Hubert is cool as and is trying to better the situation with the gym that they burn down. These people feel alienated and abandoned by society, they live in a place where children have do play amongst used needles and YOU wanna tell them they need to have more hope?! think you'd feel differently if you had to live in the Parisian projects. Good discussion topic, thanks for responding with a legitimate comment!

What a film - lost count of the times I watched this on VHS

I recommend that everyone sees this film - it is just as relevant now as when it was made

I don't think I fully appreciated this film when forced to study it for a film studies course at college. Would be great to see it again.

agreed top movie, i was saddened by my friends and family who didnt like it because it had subtitles and because its black and white.

Can anyone tell me what the subtitles in this version are like?
Ive got it on DVD and its white text with no background.
As its a black and white movie half the text is unreadable most of the time.

Cheers

I bought this on DVD before and the subtitles were awful. Not for the translation, but the fact they were often unreadable white subs over the actual picture. Is this version better?

DOH! answer already given - thanks!
