It seems to need 2 USB cables - one for data and one for power. Is this normal with these drives?
#2
It's a common feature - I have a maxtor drive that has a single cable with 2 usb ports on the end (1 power, 1 data). However, I run it 100% fine off a single usb port on my macbook pro...ymmv depending on what laptop you have.
#3
The review on the page suggests that the second power cable is optional and provides higher transfer speeds.

I have 4 of the 160Gb version and they are brilliant. Can confirm that it runs on 1 usb on all the computers and laptops I've used. Some older laptops may need 2 cables.

If your want another 40Gb for £10, you could also try this one.

or if you want the largest possible (250Gb for under £94), you could also try:

Good price. Thanks for the link to the 250gb version (very tempted)

I have been looking at the Western Digital passport drive on Ebuyer.....seem to be getting some bad reviews about the drives dying.

Do you think Lacie are more reliable?
#6
Very good price. Very tempted to buy one. Thanks:)

The 160Gb link is not to a WD model. However, I do have a WD 2.5" 120Gb USB drive and the only issue I have is that it does not seem to work on all machines I try, especially if its on a long USB extender. No idea why it does not like USB extenders. Only has 1 usb cable as well.

I personally love the Lacie USB 2.5" drives, thats why I have 4 of them. Not had a single problem with them. However, there are certainly a few people on the forums that dont seem to like Lacie.

Just FYI, the splitter cable is actually power+data from one, just power from another. This is because the USB spec provides 500mA maximum per port and the drive may sometimes need more than that.

Most ports will provide quite a bit more than 500mA so it works fine on a single port with most computers, but it's running out of spec. To be totally correct, the second port should not supply more than 100mA until the attached device asks the USB controller for more power, but luckily most USB controllers break that part of the spec so it (and things like USB chargers etc.) works despite breaking the USB standard. But they work so who cares :whistling:

Welcome to HotUKDeals ElRazur :)

The one at Maplin is a full size external drive that's mains powered, whereas these are portable 2.5" and bus powered.

This is the pocket version - on the same page, they are advertising the 160gb one for 67.29 delivered. Works out slightly cheaper than the 120Gb one.

120/45 = 2.67Gb/£
160/67.29 = 2.38Gb/£

Depends on what you can afford though :)
