I was looking for a 2TB hard disk and spotted this. Its way cheaper than any 2TB drive as a stand alone, and from what I can tell the style on this Lacie box is lovely.
It does beg the question, whats inside it and it taken apart it it a cheap way to land a 2TB drive. Failing that I am sure someone after a lot of external sotrage will fine this useful, so here goes!

Jump to unread Post a CommentNone I can think of. Regarding the drive though, I think it's going to be a single 1TB drive. I base the theory on the weight, which eBuyer seem to think is a shade over 1.5KG. A Samsung internal 1TB drive weighs about 750g, so 1 drive + power adaptor + cable + retail boxing should come roughly to the weight of this. If it was two drives stacked, it would be minimum of 2KG. So, assuming eBuyer's numbers aren't wrong, yup, it might well be a cheap way to get yourself a 2TB drive. Although you'd be about £10 better off if you bought a 1.5TB drive + a 1TB drive, so it's maybe not that great a deal all in all.
2TB drives are not cost effective (£ per GB) at the moment. But for those who need it in one drive like me (I have 2x 1TB in a NAS and want to upgrade) there is no other option.
I find it hard to understand how a 2TB drive in a caddy can be cheaper than a drive without the caddy! Maybe someone will know and sprinkle some water on my bonfire...

It's not uncommon for drives in caddys to be cheaper than their bare drive counterparts, this is because certain manufacturers can buy these drives in bulk heavily discounted to put in their enclosures and thus pass the saving on while still making a profit.

In view of what I've said earlier, I can't see how it is a 2 TB drive unless LaCie haven't updated their website but If it somehow is a single 2 TB drive then I think it is a good deal.
doesnt come up with much. I found it on dabs.com but the picture was the same. Can't find any reviews of it either.

Sorry but youre mistaken, the drive you are referring to is this one The Lacie Hard Disk Max 2tb drive.
That is different to the drive posted here.

I got a 1.5 tb for about 85 quid a while ago, it takes ages to be seen by windows... err...
Far better to build yourself, that way you can get the best drive (WD Caviar Black) which will be covered with 5X the warranty (5 years). All you then need to do is buy a case for it .

agreed, but the you cant diy for even close to this price :(
Will continue to stick with Western Digital My Book external HDD's (have 5 x 500GB Premium models plus recently purchased a 1TB one) me thinks...
