#4
Huh - why did google checkout deduct £10? Have they started that discount offer again?
#5
Yep, for 'first time' users. Looks like they're as good at promotional discounts as LXD
#6
Good price for 500GB HDD, thnaks drtesseract :)
#7
This deal was lacking a rather important addendum which I've now edited on :)
#8
This drive only has 8mb cache, the freecom one has 16mb cache for £3.00 more.
#9
so, the bigger the cache the bigger the...? err..whats a cache?
#10
I bought one of these last Friday and it arrived on Monday - not bad for free delivery. I didn't use Google checkout though because there's something about Google which makes me feel uneasy. They already hold way too much information about people and they ain't getting any about me. 8-)

Anyhoo, paranoia aside, this is a good deal for a 500GB drive. It's the smallest drive I have. It is quiet. It stays cool when idle but gets quite warm under constant use. It is reasonably fast but is considerably slower than my FireWire HDs That is only to be expected though. In my opinion it is excellent value for money therefore, recommended.

So £10 is all it takes for google to "buy" your credit card details? People are far to willing to give google lots of personal information through their searches and now you are willling to give them credit card details too?

Quite correct but, I don't give them information through searches as I do not permit any cookies from Google, any Java interaction with Google and, I browse through a proxy. I do this with everyone really not just Google. This way I am able to choose to whom I give information. 8-)

However, that is really off topic. Just under £54 is a good deal for a 500GB external HD.
#13
yeah ne1 know why the cache is so important??
#14
in very basic terms, a larger disk cache can help speed up transfers

Better that Google pay £10 for them than to give them to Ebuyer or ANY other company you do dealings with for FREE:giggle: Did Paypal pay you for your details? Didn't think so and Ebay corp are MUCH worse than Google.

I'm not so stupid as to use Paypal or ebay either! I Bet 99% of people just don't think about the implications of a company like google having your credit card details though, I think they will regret it in the end.
#17
bought this this morning.

according to the freecom page
** PLEASE NOTE BOX SAYS MINIMUM 8MB CACHE BUT ALL EBUYER DRIVES SHIP AS 16MB CACHE **
#18
poo !! bought one yesterday at the full price, didn't know the google discount offer was back on.

Ebuyer have already picked & shipped it ! Expecting delivery tomorrow.

Anyhoo, will let you know what I think of it when it turns up.

Really? I've saved thousands thanks to ebay sellers and indeed managed to source things that would be near impossible to find elsewhere. At the end of the day, giving GC or PP your card details is no different to walking into Tesco, infact i'd say Tesco is the worst out of the 3. You do know they record all your shopping habits?

I got the LaCie hard disk delivered this morning from ebuyer, the drive is a Samsung Spinpoint T series HD501LJ. The drive has 16mb cache.

More detail on the drive here: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=computersperipherals&type=harddiskdrives&subtype=spinpointtseries&model_cd=HD501LJ.

Should we all be doing a load of searches we are actually not interested in, so as to put google off the scent then? Can I have a list of a couple of dozen search terms that I should put in for this purpose please?

that's the problem with drives so big, you really can't afford to lose that much data, so you have to buy another drive to backup to, which gets expensive....

personally though i wouldn't trust anything much to external drives anyway - they'd be my backup not my primary.

surprised about wd not being great, so i'm guessing you're saying go seagate?

People who are interested in this deals, be cautious. This is only an OEM one. not http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10764 or http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-Desktop-Design-Porsche-7200RPM/dp/B000GIXVZW/ref=pd_bbs_1/202-4840975-7370230?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1194014566&sr=8-1.

You cannot find it on lacie's website and it's much worse: not designed by F.A Porsche, no switch on and off button, the power supply is also much worse.

How is it OEM when it quite clearly has LACIE stamped on the top:?

Play.com

From reviews i've read the Porche designed ones are flimsy plastic rubbish by the way.

I decided to buy a 500gb HD from Ebuyer with the Google £10 discount - but with recent experiences in the trade I've gone for an internal Western Digital...best HD brand out there in my opinion.

Lacie told me this one is only for resellers and they do not sell it, so I say it OEM.

I cannot say anything about the Porche designed ones because I have not one. But I believe it should be at least not worse than this one: higher level product with switch on-off button, software CD and better power supply.

How do you know it? Can you open the case? Besides, do you know how to access the SMART information? The WD diagnostics cannot. Thanks.
#32
right click on drive, select properties, then click hardware.
#33
Nice one for this - works a treat, just what I needed

Thanks. Do you know how to access the SMART information? I tried several software, but they all said information unavailable.

I have the Porche design one - it doesnt have a on off switch. I assume that this one is the same. Great price for a very good drive in my opinion. If it has the drive mentioned in a previous post, this is an excellent deal. Voted HOT. :)

Really? check http://www.lacie.com/download/manual/p3_usb_hd_en.pdf or the picture http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10468.

From the OS, the internal drive should be HD501LJ. But I cannot figure out how to open the case to have a look.

Your correct, the 500gb edition does, but the one that I have - the 250gb edition doesnt. I have no idea why. :x Sorry, my bad.

Yours may be old model. I believe all new Porche design models including 250gb one have the button.

By the way, can you access the SMART information of your drive?

Sorry for being a techno numpty...but we need some extra space as our pc is sloooow (192mb?!), tried to install more memory to speed it up but it kept crashing so thinking an external hard drive will take some of the programmes instead? Will I be able to upload Windows XP onto here without a problem does anyone know please? Our pc is full of kids photos too (prob why it's so slow...) so we're hoping to get some sort of backup, maybe this? And lastly, (sorry folks) does this just plug into usb port?

We're tight on cash so I'm trying to make sure it'll be the right one before I part with the dosh..

Thanks lots, sorry for lots of q's!
