This has been posted a couple of times but as far as I can see this is cheaper than anywhere else instock. Seems a pretty good price as it is only £9 more than the 1Tb buffalo drive which seems to be the cheapest at the moment. Although shallow, the reason I am going for it is it looks a lot smarter.

The Hard Disk external hard drive designed by Neil Poulton is an efficient and compact storage solution. This hard drive has a unique blue diode that creates a stylish, lighted effect on your desktop. Instead of a fan, the Hard Disk from LaCie is equipped with an advanced cooling system, so you can store your files, images and music safely and with ease.

Capacity - 1 TB
Interface - USB 2.0
Performances - 7200 rpm
Transfer Rate - Up to 480 mbps (60 MB/s)
Size - 117 x 193 x 45 mm

AKA "fingerprint magnet".

Mr. Poulton really stretched himself with this, hope he got paid a suitably massive wedge of cash for 'designing' a shiny black box to put a hard drive in.

I've been collecting Neil's work for some time...this one is sure to be sought after, I read an article where he was asked about the design ethos behind this hard drive ...with a furrowed brow & a pregnant pause he said "It takes me to a world where everything is black, ....a rectangular hell juxtaposed with the gloss of hope" (that'll be why it's black, rectangular & glossy)

"Oi Neil...it's a ***%$'in hard drive, not a thesis"

I must be shallow too. This is 2001 obelisk sexy. Goes lovely with one of those samsung laser printers that are equally obelisky and shiny. :)

Didn't vote, but having got the old Porsche styled and the new Neil Poulton styled HDD both, it's a shame they didn't stick with the Porsche one because at least that had an on off switch at the back. Unless you like keeping it permanently plugged in or plugging/unplugging just to use it, or switching the mains etc.

Colder than cold.

Pretty expensive compared to other 1TB options and it's a dust magnet.

This guy must be quite a designer! The likes of you and me could have never in a million years designed a black shiny box like that!!;-)

Cold! From an Amazon customer review:
... comes with 16Mb cache and not 32mb as stated in the Amazon description, ... The spec says "fanless, near silent operation", But it's not. As far as I can tell it has got a fan, and it's nowhere near silent.

these drives are horse sh1t, ive got one and i know someone else. both drives, after about half an hour just unmount themselves, impossible to make an initial back up with Time Machine.

i usually rate LaCie too, but i think they messes this one up

That seems to be an Apple problem. Didn't google too deeply into it but the hits I was getting seem to all be from Apple users.

Lot of bad feeling about this drive, shame, I still love the look of it.

My friend has this version of the HDD and he thinks its great, it really is quiet I can say that too myself. just to let everyone know that the eSATA and FW version of this is avaliable at its cheapest and a good price for a eSATA drive below...

I have found that Lacie customer service dept to be A+.

I had a unit that went down two years after purchase - no problem in replacing it.

"the Hard Disk from LaCie is equipped with an advanced cooling system, so you can store your files, images and music safely and with ease."

Never realised a cooling system allowed easier storage of data, thought it was there to keep the drive cool!
Oh hold on, its an advanced cooling system compromising of a grilled metal bottom.
Very useful seeing as most of a HDDs heat comes from the top not the bottom.

Overpriced for the design
