Can someone PLEASE explain to me how you get the BBQ flavour in the cooked food without using either Charcoal or Lava Rock?

Aren't these types of BBQ's just 'outdoor' grills?
#7
My gas BBQ is similar to this one in the way it works, the fat out the food drips on the metal tray it them burns and gives off smoke which gives the BBQ taste

The vapouriser bars which sit over the flames get very hot and 'vapourise' the juices when they drip on to them. This is supposed to do the same as the other BBQ types. ;-)

PS Just paid over 300 squid for a similar one which actually works well. This one is hot LOL

Isn't that just the taste of burnt fat --- which is substantially different to charcoal smoke?

I think you have to buy a smoker tray and bags of smoked wood chippings - these heat up and smoulder, smoking the food. Although it all seems a bit of a long way round, when you could just use charcoal in the first place.
#11
I bought some patio heaters and they ran on patio gas until I bought some different regulators, would this be the same?

Heat btw.
#12
So, like me Morrisons have checked the long range forecast and are avoiding having their fingers burnt. You want BBQ tasting then spend a lot less on a charcoal pit - yummy

walk away cheaper at b and q and asda

How much cheaper and can you show us proof?
#15
I don't get it either, might as well push my gas cooker outside.

Still a good price though.
#16
The law according to Homebase.

http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BuyingGuideCmd?langId=-1&storeId=20001&bgTrail=00044

"Whether you choose a charcoal or gas barbecue depends on which style of grilling you prefer - authentic charcoal or controllable gas. Food cooked on either a charcoal or gas barbecue will have the same distinctive smoky taste, as it's the fats and juices falling onto the hot coals and the resulting smoke that creates the unique barbecue flavour."

Can anyone tell when they smell a bbq aroma wafting past whether it is gas or charcoal?
#17
Great price. Voting HOT HOT HOT
#18
cant show proof but i was in asda last week and alot cheaper but could have been abit smaller ??
#19
I'll be 99% sure it won't have been a Landmann one at Asda and B & Q, it'll have just been another make 3 burner bbq which yes, can be had for cheaper but it certainly won't be the quality of this one.
I bought one last year similar to this for about the same price and will confirm it tastes just as good to me as a charcoal one but I can cook whenver I like as I just have to turn it on :)

Does my head in these people who say its just an outdoor grill......do these people turn their cookers/grills upside down??? I mean, a grill cooks from above unless its a lean grilling machine thing but then they just draw all the fat away not allowing it to smoke like a flavour bar does :)

As you can see, I am a fan of the gas bbq and I do also have a charcoal one but it never gets used now
#20
Do they have the gas bottles also?
#21
Are you supposed to put lava rock in gas bbqs if they have got the metal heat spreaders in? I got some for mine but not sure whether they are needed.
#22
Are these any better than using a George Foreman grill and an extension cord?

;-)

Voted hot and will be getting one to replace my 2 burner that I bought from homebase 6 years ago.

Is this powerful enough to feed a large family party?? Our 2 burner just goes cold as soon as you put the first lot of meat on and you have to wait till it comes back to temperature I guess because of the dripping fat/juices... and not being powerful enough. These should come with a K/w output shouldn’t they?

Also will this be a good steady/sturdy one? I have seen quite a few that are real flimsy and must be built out of tin that the wind can push over. Need a quality one that will last trouble free for another 6 years.

Cheers.
#24
PS: anyone seen a picture with it fully open including the cupboard doors?

Good question - I presume so and I guess it will come with it - Anyone??

You dont need lava rocks with this type of gas BBQ

Our gas one is great we use it all the time as it very easy to use and gets hot in 2 mins rather than 30 mins with charcoal, we find it easier and the food tastes similar to charcoal IMO
#27
Amazon doing this one for £224.95 so this is a bargain, thanks for the post, will be in there tomorrow. Heat added

Hmmm not so sure about this now...
#33
Why are you not sure ?

You dont need lava rocks in gas BBQ's nowadays most of them dont have them
#34
I've been used to traditional charcoal and our current BBQ which is Gas + LavaRocks.

So I'm thinking the taste will be somewhat different. I know restaurants also use gas grills with Lava Rocks for that BBQ taste.... Maybe I’m just well out of date...
#35
i like bbq's but find that it smokes out my neighbours and they always have washing on the line so i end up runing up and down the road telling them to get it in. i was given a gas bbq to try last summer and my god the difference! it had lava rocks and sometimes had flare ups like a normal bbq but to be honest the taste was the same and it cooked in the same amount of time as a normal bbq. only difference is there is no messing around waiting for the coals to get hot and no smoke!

i have bought myself a new one this year, just a simple 2 burner that uses rocks. if you change the lava rock for penroc you get an even more bbq taste! and remember the more burners you have the more gas you use! no point having a 3 or 4 burner for a small family of 3/4!

If anybody gets one of these today can they please post an entry. It will save me a trip if they are not doing the deal.

Thanks

Went to Hadleigh and Eastwood stores in Essex - no stock. Canvey store apparently had 3! Large stores only folks!

Went to Lincoln branch at 9.30am this morning and they had sold out! They only had 2 in stock apparently which is pretty poor. They have however told me that they will order some more which should arrive within 24 hours so will keep you informed.
