Looks good... does anyone know how this compares to the dell vostro deal that was on earlier this month?

This looks a good deal for the money. Can't understand it. Compares nicely to the Vostro spec but it depends which one. one had a 256mb 880GT graphics card in for 360ish and that rocked, but it had a 17inch monitor which is why I left it.

Edit: bare in mind it is only 1.6ghz, where dell would be 2ghz + for similar money.
#7
if it says "Intel GMA X3100 Dynamic ", than why does it say 24 bit colours

i think it should be 32 bit, with this intel ?
#8
So, if you had the chance now... you would go for the dell? ( I mean without the optional graphics card)

Where ???I will get it.

In comparison to the Dell Vostro 1510( for £293) - the cpu is slightly slower (1.6ghz v 1.8ghz and has less cache memory).Anyway ,it is not a big gap in performance between them as I don't believe that anyone buys laptops like those to play games ;)
A quality of built should be similar, Toshiba may have better keyboard and screen...

If I had a choice I would probably go for Dell...but decision would not be simple... and the Dell is currently much more expensive (end of that offer)

Believe me The Toshiba is better than the Dell. Dell laptops are worthy, but not sparklingly fast, but Toshiba's are quite a bit faster, are well optimised and my latest, an A200-1YY running Vista for business is the fastest Vista I've seen and that includes Desktops.

I even put Vista on a 3 year Toshiba, added memory to 3 Gb and its really excellent performance, providing you don't expect 3D!

Best of luck.

Decent laptop for the price.... but why does it only have Vista Basic!? Strange!

The Toshiba will only be faster if the specs are better, just as the Dell will be faster if the Dell has better specs.

A little slower than the dell in terms of the CPU but otherwise, probably better made to make up for it.

24-bit = 32-bit. They're identical. The screen is probably only 18-bit anyway.

good price for a decent laptop

good deal, but it has Vista Home Basic Pre-installed even though it has 2GB of Ram which is enough to run Home Premium.

Fair enough, but it should come with Home Premium as standard as Home Basic is for low spec pc/laptops.

i get what your saying, but thats why it must on the cheap end, kept with basic software.

you can get themes and other things to give it some cosmetic surgery.

what are the real benefits of premium over basic, anything substantially important, something thats really required?

By current standards this is a low-spec machine.

Why is this so hot??? It's an old model with a slow processor with just 1MB cache, slow X3100 shared graphics, no firewire, no tv-out and horrible shiny screen. I think the Dell Vostro or 1525 are better spec machines with a similar price (and you can still get them with XP, don't forget). You can also get a proper anti-reflective screen from Dell for no extra money. So this Toshiba is cold from me.

:D
Yes, I did expect some reactions like that.Another Dell's fanboy...
How many percent faster is the 'new' cpu with 2mb cache than Pentium DC...5...6%?Integrated graphic, lack of firewire...you get what you pay for...remember it's just 295 quids...;)
#26
It only has vista basic because it is cheaper for the manufacturer. Voted hot, good budget laptop at a great price. Go for the dell with the graphics card if you want to play games though.

Gotta agree with that. And i have to add these Toshibas have terrible build quality. they creak just when you pick them up, and the screen hinges wear out too quickly.

AND the other annoying thing that 50% of people that have tried using one will agree about is the annoying "off centre" touch pad. why does it have to be over to the left!!!

ok, Could you find me a better spec from Dell than, for approx.£300 delivered , please?

I am not a Toshiba fanboy, however I belive that they are one of the quality manufacturers (one of a few).If you think that's a bad deal, find a better one.I like criticism as long as it's constructive and help the others to make a right decision.

I am not a Dell fan but I have got a Dell at the moment which I bought on MikeT's advice. You can scan offers here on HotUK and will find many bargains with better specs from Dell, Toshiba, HP, and others (I'm not doing the work for you). But if you can't, well this laptop is not awful, just not such a bargain.

I have done it already, and I do not ask you to do anything for me but I would like you to prove your words which at the moments are just empty , mate.
There were great offers from Dell...yes ...were.The Dell that cost 292 cost nearly £400 now.

isnt that the point of a deal, value for money at the time.

yes 2-3 weeks ago it was the dell 1525 for £292, but its expired by the looks of things.

now we can wait for another dell deal to come about, when will that be............................

"im waiting for the best pc in the world to come down to such a price that the companies are paying me to take it off their hands" attitude is just plain silly, "its not better than the dell deal posted 3 weeks ago, you know the one, the 1525 that is not available at a discounted.................oh yeah its not available.............."

this is as hot as a laptop deal can be considering the current deals, maybe tomorrow there will be a much better deal, we will judge and mark when that time comes.
#32
It was the Vostro 1510 for £292. The Inspiron 1525 bargain was £369, I know I bought one

I could not find a definitive answer. There is no card reader among available upgrades (in theory of course as we cannot do this on ebuyer).

Maybe this would do the job ?

EDIT +++++++++++++++

Price has gone up to £299
