Best Miyazaki film I recon. I can remember watching it in the 80s on itv on a Sunday afternoon(I think it was a Sunday afternoon) and being AMAZED. I tell people off for saying things are 'amazing' when they are not amazing at all, but when I was 8-9 it was literally amazing.

Hot deal for a pre order, but hopefully get cheaper again after a bit.

Why did disney not just enhance the brilliant independent redub instead of completely spoiling it?
#12
What's this about redub? I've only heard the whatever his name is from Dawsons Creek and whatever her name is from True Blood version. Is there another english dub?
#13
When the film came out in 1986 it had a great English dub which kept the vibe of the original Japanese version.

The current one disney is touting has James Van Der Beek ("Dawson") going "HEY! WHAT? HEY! WHAT'S THAT!" every two seconds. Flip between japanese and english - any time the main characters are stood in silence at an awesome spectacle or you're just listening to ambient sounds he'll be blurting and wheezing to fill the void in the recording studio. :)

I bought the dvd below in 2004 and have only seen that - is it that much of a difference and which dvd has the original track ?

(Disney is the distributor, just to clarify)
#17
Yeah, that 2004 version is the Disney re-dub with more popular actors. I'm not even sure if the original made it to DVD - the original version is the one that was on UK TV in the 90s :) IMO it makes a huge difference, but some might not agree. As far as I know the Japanese is the original and best version anyway.

Awesome film. Was also hooked on anime like many others after stumbling upon it on itv. Now my kids enjoy miyazaki films just as much now, especially ponyo!

Right - so there is a 90's dub, then the 1998/2003 dub and then a new 2010 dub??

Might see the reviews on the blu then -but if i remember rightly i laughed quite a lot at the voices on my dvd when i saw it originally...........

Isn't it Optimum releasing?

Optimum has UK distribution rights. Disney deals with distribution in the USA as well as being in charge of the English Dubs.

Does anyone know if it's at all possible to get that original dub that went out on ITV in the 80's? I've been struggling for ages because it's far and away the best English dub for this anime (which is my favourite from Ghibli!) All pointers welcome.;)

I imported the original Japanese dual audio dvd back in 2002 or so I think, cause I loved it so much as a kid. I didn't care how much it was going to cost and it sits proudly in the middle of my Ghibli collection with all the Japanese writing on it lol.

I'll try and find out where from when I get home, but it was expensive :(

I have the second half on VHS that I recorded the second time it was on TV (with the original dub), but not much use now. Not sure why I kept that tape really.
#25
I've still got the original ITV showing on VHS, complete with advert breaks etc, and spent a week remastering it to AVI, combining the video from the Japanese language DVD to the dubbed audio I captured to WAV manually to create a perfect (well, as good as it could be in 2001!) digital copy.

6 months later they released a DVD in Japan with the English Dub as an optional language. ****!

Still, I'm pretty sure my copy's better 8)

I got the DVD anyway, it's still available from JList.com - $60 + shipping! It even specify "NOTE: the English dub is the one made in 1989 for JAL" so you can be sure you're getting the right one \o/

<3 Laputa, my 4 year old niece is a big fan now - we've got a wind-up robot music box that plays the theme too, she loves it!

Voted Hot.
On the topic, does anybody actually listen to the dub rather than Japanese with subs?

Thanks PinkyPonk Driver. Is it this one and does around £36 for the DVD sound right? I've bought it once already only to find out i got the 2nd dub (found out the hard way that there were three dubs rather than the two) -

I fail to see how £15 for a single Ghilbli movie is a deal.

Yes that's the one alright :)

Not sure how much but i think after import duty it was just under £30. Lol my most expensive dvd by a mile.
#30
I had this on VHS then VCD then on DVD not sure what versions and while its my favourite movie by miles I noticed the odd bits of jerkiness in the panning on some shots that I originally put down to dodgy copies on the VHS and VCD version but when its also in the DVD Im guessing its actually in the original movie and Bluray wont improve this. My childhood memmories of it from TV are of all the animation being completerly flawless

you people need to stop with the dubs!!!! listen to original audio!!!! nothing wrong with reading subs!!

dont know how you can say its amazing without being distracted by the voices!

The counter argument would be that by reading the subs you're missing the beautiful animation. You can miss a lot in just a single frame
