"Fat Quarter" is easy! :)
A metre (or yard) of quilters cotton is (almost) a big square (100cm x 110xm)
You can cut this metre into four quarter metres in two different ways....
Standard, thin or "Skinny" quarter metres are when you cut it into 4 long strips (like cutting toast into soldiers!)
"Fat Quarters" are when you cut it into 4 little squares (like cutting a sandwich up for a toddler!)
It's cut that way (into fat quarters) because it usually ends up being a more useful shape of fabric "chunk" for making things from, to have a small square rather than a long strip.

HTH and hot deal! (I'm so sorry I missed them!)
I do hope you enjoy making whatever project you have planned for them!
