For anyone with O2 on a "business" contract (which is not uncommon - I have one - for personal use and the contract is called "best of business".)

I have just formally been sent a letter informing me that O2 are going to start charging for 0845, 0870 etc calls from 28 September and no longer allowed out of free minutes. These calls will now be charged at a whacking 17p + Vat per minute.

This was previously posted in this thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73528 - but rather than adding to a "dead thread", I thought I'd re-post since this is a new development and whislt related, not the same as this is for those on a "business" contract.

The only reason I signed up for O2 was because these type of numbers were free.

So a clear change of contract and due to it adversely affecting those on it dues to increased call costs, you will be allowed to legally cancel.

However, be prepared for a battle. They will not accept this over the phone. Like they are doing to you, YOU must put your cancellation in writing to them. I will post one of the letter examples that people have used here later today.

I was going to cancel the last time this info was posted - but it didnt affect me on my contract. This time it does - and I will!!!!

NOTE: THIS IS FOR ANY 02 CONTRACT - not just a business one as originally posted.

Sim would die unless you requested to be switched to sim only I believe

Phone would live on though

If you wanted you could transfer your number to another pay and go network (but not o2)

I am not on a business package I think (I got the 02 contract with CPW back in Feb) but got a text saying 0844 etc calls will now be charged. I got the phone mainly for 0844 calls. Can someone please confirm that its ok for me to end contract early because of this and where I need to send which letter.

many thanks

How did you manage to cancel on phone told me I had to write in?
#12
I've had a £35.99 o2 contract since February, but have not used their service at all due to a dispute that is still going on.

What are the chances of me being able to cancel? Are there any good excuses I could use in my letter?

ask for retentions, as they are in breach of contract the 30 days notice means nothing. They broke the deal.

Is it a personal or business contract? (Im not referring to your use - but what O2 call it!)

This post only refers to anyone on a business tariff (since that's what I have and what the letter I received referred to) but it may also be for a personal contract.

Have a look on your bills and check to see if any 0870 etc type calls are free - then ring and ask them.

I'm not surpised this has happened and Im a bit gutted my contract expires in December and not much later. To be fair, mines on a cashback deal (7 months free over 12 months), but the cashback comes back in equal chunks. Otherwise it would of been a real result! The contract I'm on is £35 per month for 250 free minutes. I think I can do a little better than that - since the contract was only taken because it DID include these types of numbers.

personal contracts also... not just business mate. depends on your contract If you get the 08 numbers, no text or letter and it's fairly safe to say it doesn't apply..
#15
Its a personal contract. I think it should be able to work on personal contracts as Cyrus received a text saying 0844 will be charged.

Hopefully I can cancel.

Spoke to O2 cs who said all contracts and cancellation not a problem although they do try and offer sweeteners to make you stay. However it has been reported on MSE that if you have never used these numbers they were being more difficult.

sweeteners are a total scam, ask for a pac code. get a better deal as a new customer.

I'm a bit confused here......I need to ring up and ask to cancel because they did ? or did not? send me a letter or text stating the above changes?
#21
I'm on the phone to cpw and the lady said I can not cancel because o2 have stated in their TC's that they can change theit TC's without prior notice........

Thanks Guv. I have 2 O2 contracts, one directly with O2 and the other with *******s carphone warehouse. I spoke to O2 and they were happy to cancel the contract and gave me an email to write to and they said, I had to give 30 days notice and that they will check if I have used these numbers in the last 6 months and if yes, they will cancel my contract. Fair enough. Point to note here is, they will not issue a PAC code as the contract is terminated by me.

I spoke to CPW, and they initially refused to cancell inspite of me speaking to cancellations manager and he said, O2's terms and condition doesn't appy to them and they are free to make changes to contracts at anytime. I was disappointed and then I dug out the terms and conditions of the O2 contract from CPW website and under the t&C 11.5.3 it clearly says we can give 30 days notice if any significant changes happen. I again went back to this nut manager and read out the T&C and immediately he agreed to cancel my contract. He said, he is going to email the process team and the contract will be cancelled at the end of 30 days. His name is: Mr.Kevin Hickie, manager for special disconnections and billing department.

Hoorrayy!!!!! well done hotukdeals.

i would quite like to leave as i exclusively use o2 for the 08 access, but i got a 11 month free line rental deal on a 12m contract and stil have two cashback claims to go... i know i will eventually get all my money back anyway, but can anyone see me ending my contract sooner?
#25
With Carphone W H O2 contracts you will continue to get all the 08 numbers free well "free" within your inclusive minutes. I spoke to them last week as I make lots of 08 calls
As other have said using my mobile for these numbers my BT bill usually is about 25p for the odd call made plus line rental :)

I am with 02 CPW. I had a text saying that I will have pay 20p per minute for 0844 & 0845 numbers.

I'm a personal Pay Monthly customer.

I just rang O2 and said I want to cancel. They let me cancel and asked me if I wanted to go on SIM only 1000 texts and 400 minutes - £20 a month. I agreed to that.

I was gonna get a new contract + phone, but apparantly you can't do that right after you cancel on the same number (I want to keep my number). So I'm gonna start a new contract after I have the SIM only one for a month.
#32
From 28th September 2007 the rate of 20p per minute will apply to these numbers. Calls to these numbers will not be included in bundle minutes on any Pay Monthly plan.
#33
Well I rang CPW o2 again at 5.30pm today, asking to have my contract cancelled, told her about point 11.5.3 of the o2 TC's, she went away for 2-3 minutes, and came back asking to ring on Monday as they are unable to deal with it at the moment.

I did ask to be put through to the retentions dpt, but she said there's no real point as I would be waiting over 45mins, what with the lines closing at 6pm.

I did ask, however, if I was able to cancel my account, and she said yes, definitely, and put a note on my account so I don't go through the agro again on Monday.

Hopefully I get a result on Monday.

Hi i was just wondering when this came about. I had upgraded in May through 02 online. My contract was offpeak. Any peak calls I made using 08** nos were charged but not the offpeak. However since july i have been charged for peak and off peak. Will this already been acknowledged in the T&C's at that point or has it just come out now. Can I still complain?

CPW have been subsidysing it up until now. They won't anymore!

CPW told me that there is nothing in the t&c's to say I can cancel, I told him there was but wasn't sure of the exact wording or term no. to which he said that someone would call me back the same day (yesterday), they never phoned me back!

I took great delight in calling him a liar because he'd said there wasn't anything to say I can cancel when there is!

I need some more help plz...
Spoke to O2 just now. A really nice lady, Claire, said av gotta pay up the remainder of my 18mths contract. I upgrade in March and sold the phone oready!! and used the money!! :-(
Now they want me to pay up the remaining months which will amount to quite a sum of money...anyone can help me on that plz?

Btw, anyone who chats to Claire, she had a really sweet voice :)
And if you ever come across this thread Claire, it'd b nice if u wud text me :)
#39
I don't believe you have to pay the remainder of your contract. If you have used 0844/0845 numbers alot in the past then you stand a good chance of being able to cancel your contract.

Look at my previous post #44, and then ring again.
