The Valve game Left 4 Dead is due out in just under 2 weeks. Amazon seem to have the cheapest price for the PC version at the moment.

Manufacturer's Description:
Left 4 Dead (L4D) is a new action title from Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, that promises to redefine the co-operative genre as those titles did for multiplayer and single player action games.
Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay of L4D casts four "Survivors" in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying "Boss Infected" mutants.

The Survivor Co-op Game Mode is played out across four sprawling campaigns, set in urban and rural environments. Each campaign has an over-riding team objective, and is comprised of five large maps. The campaigns link together to tell the story of the Survivor's escape to safety. The team of four Survivors may be comprised of 1 to 4 human players, allowing for single player and multiplayer co-op games.

Next generation AI technology powers all non-player Survivor and zombie characters. This is facilitated by the AI Director, a pool of systems used to procedurally generate a unique experience by monitoring the players' experiences and tailoring the pacing and difficulty of action for each game. This makes for a different experience each time the game is played.

In Left 4 Dead's Vs. Mode players may play as a Survivor or as one of four types of "Boss Infected." Each of the "Boss Infected" possesses an exceptional mutant ability - such as a 50-foot tongue lasso (Smoker) or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas (Boome) - instead of traditional firearms.

Almost half the price it is on Steam!

Great price. Am I right in thinking this predominantly multi-player as opposed to Half-Life which had a strong single-player game? I find single player games more fun personally, so not sure about this one.
#3
I haven't had a chance to play yet, but from what I have heard the single-player part is fun too - the teammate AI is supposedly very good. For most people though the replayability will come from online co-op.

Free demo should start on 11/11/08 and will run for 1 week, so you can try that - hopefully the deal from Amazon will last until release date (or perhaps be bettered by another shop).

Great price, gotta love how console versions are all £10 more lol

Thats part of the deal with consoles (Xbox and PS3) you buy the console at a loss to the manufacturer then they make it back with royalties on the games. PC games are much cheaper because you dont get the hardware subsidised.

Console development hardware is also extremely expensive...

Preordered my copy now from Amazon, was trying to decide whether to go for Steam at around 30 pounds ish or Shopto at 25 given the Steam version is out earlier and you get the demo but at 20 quid it's a no brainer.

I know this wont have Securom if you order from Steam, but does anyone know if the hard copy has it? I dont want that malware anywhere my computer as I use it for work.

Don't know for sure, but I think that Valve games don't have this issue because they all require you to authorise the install via your Steam account.
Why would they need Securom if you have to log in to your Steam account to play it? That's how the Orange Box games work anyway....

Yeah, that's how I understand it - the discs are basically the game content (GCF files?) that you can install straight on without downloading however Steam is still the authentication mechanism used.

Thanks for the post.

Tentatively close to ordering the PC version rather than 360. However, am I going to run into problems if I don't buy a headset for multiplayer? If so I may as well get the 360 version which I can sell on at a later date.
#13
Hmm, anyone had any experience with preorders from amazon/play before? I want to play on the 21st and I'm not sure what my best option delivery-wise is.

I would think it's going to make it easier to have some sort of mic however I think the PC is the way to go if you can as the controls will be much easier.

Amazon/Play both pretty good from my experience and what I've heard off friends. Should be looking at getting maybe a day before release or on the day. I put my order in Amazon today after playing the demo for about 15mins pre work!- loved it.
#17
Great Price, pre-ordered with a £20 gift card I got via LoveFilm, so didn't pay a penny! :D

Yeah, downloaded and gave this a go co-op with my brother - definitely won't be cancelling the preorder.

played 360 demo, quite good, I wonder if Asda will do a deal on release
#20
Will super saver delivery suffice in order to get it in time? I'm tempted to use first class as estimated delivery is days after the release :S
#21
£3 cheaper than Play's pre-order price. Heat added!
#22
Played 4 or 5 games on the pc demo...really had a blast although would have to play on expert as the other modes are fairly easy my pre-order is in voted hot

Exactly, I didn't mean it to be negative. I just wanted to point out how it's just interesting how it all balances out and you end up paying quite a bit more or equally depending on how many brand new games you buy for consoles than if you do the same with PC's, seeing as a common excuse for not buying a PC is that consoles are "so much cheaper" its kind of ironic, I guess the money goes in installments or stages with consoles as its included in the games...

Fantastic deal, $49.99 (I think!) on Steam now but I got it before at $44.99 and got the demo a week early, exchange rate is in tatters and probably paid closer to 30 if not more.

Great game, awesome online as well.

Great Game have played the demo, was going to order this anyway so great find at that price. N1 . Heat Added :D

How can that have been posted before - it is the same URL as my post?
#31
Did this a few days ago. Couldnt believe how much cheaper it was. Bracing my self to whoop some zombie ass!
#32
the game is fun to play, you still have 3 days to download and play the demo if you like www.steampowered.com.

it is ver yrepetative, but the fullgame has more levels and will probably be entertaining online, especially with friends

I've confused myself sorry  :whistling:
#34
A microphone is a must, it makes the game so much more involving.
#35
If you're thinking the chapters were a little short on the demo please don't be put off - I read somewhere (lost the link conveniently!) that these are only a fraction of the complete game's chapters and that they are longer.

this is a great game on xbox 360, cant wait to get it!!
#37
At last a good game that isn't infected by DRM. I love Valve, I've BOUGHT every Half Life game that's ever been released, I can't wait for Episode 3. Yes, BOUGHT, even though I could have downloaded them for free. Are you listening EA, UBisoft etc. If you treat your customers with respect they'll do the same to you. Treat them like criminals and they'll act like them.

With these games that are also available on Steam, can you buy the physical retail dics, install and then get it associated with your Steam account by typing the serial number into Steam thereby having it on there forever?

Also, if you do, does this mean that if you ever re-install it on another PC you have to use your Steam username to access and play it or will it work without an account?

It gets registered to your username, if you ever want to play it on another PC, log in to steam, download and enjoy

On another note, had to cancel my copy, couldn't get either of my routers to play nice with it :x will have to use the 360

Are you sure it was your routers? I heard they had server problems at first and were working on a fix. :)
