My eldest got this for her 4th birthday. It gave her confidence to follow instructions. She turned 5 in June and over the summer built Rapunzels tower, Cinderella carriage and the Lego friends pool with no assistance.
We are now using this set with our 3 year old. She is too young yet to fully understand the instructions, but, she loves being the same as her big sister. The build time is relatively short, which is great for shorter attention spans.

Yes it fits the standard lego but they have a few bigger pieces too to make it a bit easier for younger kids. But it can be mixed with the older lego friends etc when they are ready for that... I managed to get it for £11 on amazon last christmas though so worth watching it.
