Might be worth £45 extra for 12GB RAM and Intel Core i7-6500U Processor( 2.50GHz 1866MHz 4MB)
or you could buy an SSD for that price and replace the DVD recorder, voted hot because I think that it's a pretty decent spec for the money considering it has a dedicated gpu. :)

Is the 940mx much better than the HD520 on the CPU? I heard with the onboard graphics getting so good these days that the low end nvidia offerings rarely make sense any more.

In most uses you don't need 12GB RAM and 8GB is enough (even in games and stuff). And the 940MX is almost twice as fast as the Intel HD 520 in most synthetic benchmarks:
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GeForce-940MX-vs-Intel-HD-520-Mobile-Skylake/m142179vsm36797

While iGPUs are improving, they are still not as good as some of the dGPUs. The HD520 is probably on par with the GT 920M

If you're not a gamer then you won't realise the difference between the two laptops, and for most light-moderate uses you won't notice the difference between i5 and an i7.

So in your opinion the i5 you submitted here is better than this

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-510-15-6-laptop-white-10146986-pdt.html

Or the i7 upgrade on the lenovo site one

(I know it is each to their own and I really appreciate your help

It is a better deal if quidco tracks at 10% and you also claim 10% through currys with their current offer.

Probably not, most thin (or below average thickness) laptops have their batteries built-in.
