There is no way there is an SSD in there for that price! SDDs don't even come in this capacity, it would have to be 256GB.
#2
I was amazed at the price too, but both myself and a friend have called the enquiry line and both times it was confirmed that it's an SSD drive, so I can only go by what I'm told.

I've taken a record of when I called and who I spoke to and have also saved the web page as proof, so if it isn't an SSD drive I'll be making a complaint! ;-)

It's still not a bad laptop for the price though :-)
#3
I just had a check of the spec for this lappy, it's HDD...
#4
hey,

I know i may sound stupid but whats the difference between SSD and HDD?

They will just be reading the same page as you, they have no idea of the difference between SSD and HDD.

A solid state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that, similar to flash drives, uses solid-state memory to store persistent data, but is designed to replace a traditional hard drive (HDD). The benefits of a SSD in comparsion to traditional HDD are smaller energy consumption, speed (in terms of data access), and higher reliability.

SSD is solid state, i.e. memory chips so the drive has no moving parts.
HDD is your normal, spinning, harddrive

So is it really worth paying £500 for this same laptop just cos it has a SSD. Y not get this one posted for £329?

The OP's deal is for this laptop with the SSD but the original info is wrong - for 329 notes you will NOT get a 250GB SSD laptop
#10
very echo-y in here today!:-D:oops:
#11
Still a decent deal

And you get a drive with moving parts!
#12
No, my point was is it worth paying £500 for the SSD or just better to get HDD at £329?
[mod]#13
Lenovo's site list it with HDD and dont alow you to respec the drive.

I think someone got mixed up when writing out the spec as it says SSD not applicable on some spec sheets.
#14
Very strange that this laptop from a decent maunufacturer with a decent spec and at a very decent price is not getting many hot votes so far.

What are you talking about? The only mention of £500 I can see in the deal is CorneliusM mentioning that's what a 250GB SSD would cost on it's own.

If you've seen a deal elsewhere with identical laptops except for the drive and price then I'd say go for the HDD one at £330, if you're only buying an entry level laptop then the difference an SSD will make isn't worth the extra cost.
#16
Never mind the SSD which is clearly a HDD.

What's really sad is that an Acer with similar specs gets voted hot here on HotUK and a Lenovo (IBM) gets voted cold. Just shows me how much I can (not) rely on hot votes here.
#17
Quite, but I think the voting reflects the misinformed spec and fails to spot the product as a fine deal anyway.
#18
The laptop even with the HDD seems like a decent deal.

I've spoken with Tesco who confirmed it will arrive with an SSD.

I do suspect the person on the phone has no idea of the difference.

Given the cheapest 256gb ssd I can find is ~£500 I suspect its not going to arrive with one :)

However a quick call to consumer direct this afternoon to find out where I stand advised the following...
(I have no idea if this is good advice or not, but its the only advice I could find).

"If the laptop that arrives is not as described, and payment has been taken, then a contract has been formed at the point of sale. A contract which tesco are in breach of.

They have 2 options...
1) Supply the item described.
2) Refund in full

However if they choose to refund in full, you are entitled to buy a similar spec to that described and as they are in breach of contract (Sale of goods act 1979, breach of description) I will have suffered consequential losses, specifically a loss of bargin and as such I can claim the difference in price back"

To be honest, i'd be happy with £20 of tesco vouchers for my trouble :)

I repeat, I am not a legal eagle in any way, shape or form. I was just curious and this is what I was told. I'd suggest you speak to them first before trusting a stranger on the internet.

It all depends how much you care really :whistling:

It all depends on the contract which by ordering it is usually an agreement to the terms of that contract - if it hasn't got some sort of get-out clause for errors, (which this OBVIOUSLY is) then you are flying; odds on though, it will have a get-out clause! :whistling:

http://direct.tesco.com/help/directtermsandconditions.aspx
#20
I did wonder that myself, as they do ask you to state you confirm you accept terms and conditions.

I was advised that it is a statutory right, and it cannot be waived by accepting their conditions.

I actually have no intention of doing this anyway, I was just curious.

Despite the rating, it looks like a good laptop at a good price. I'm sure the wife will be very happy with it.
#21
Looks like a great laptop to me...

Here is a review of it :

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5205&review=lenovo+g550

Certainly not the fastest and definitely no SSD but for £329 it is a good spec.

Hot from me.
#22
I think its a good deal. Heat added.
#23
This is what I have been looking for. Dual core laptop, Lenovo with Webcam. The others on the site (13") didnt have DVD drives I dont think so this one was the winner.

Aside from the SSD debate, for what it is, this is an excellent deal! (if it does come with an SSD then even better)
#24
I don't think it has SSD (otherwise it woudn't be 2.5kg). Still it has everything you'll need. dual processor, good capacity hard drive. webcam, wifi, bluetooth DVD drive, card reader, face recognition too.......

£300 would be nice ;o) but £329 is not bad.
#25
SSD aside, I reckon this is a stonking deal and as such can't believe it's at 33' (can't find the degree sign!).

Might not be the prettiest looking laptop, but from some of the reviews I've read, it certainly won't break in the wind like erm.... Some of the prettier ones! Wasn't there a trick for free post at Tesco? Something to do with a SIM?

Or am I going potty?!? :w00t:

My Quidco tracked at £14 so fingers crossed it all goes through.

If I were your Uncle I'd want you to have a look and see if it does have the SSD, then at least you can complain straight away, rather than waiting 5 days. Oh go on, have a look we're all curious and can't wait until Friday! ;-)

I've bought this laptop a couple of days ago if you tell me where to look for the SSD info I will let you know? I'm well pleased with this laptop so far - so good but as you can tell i'm not that technical minded !!

Click on Start menu, move mouse pointer over Settings, then over Control Panel, then click on.... oh ********, it's Vista and I've had too much to drink (thanks to seeing the deal with 25% of 6 bottles of wine at Sainsburys ), I'm sure someone will tell you how to do it, if not I will be back later! :lazy:
#37
Hi all,

I received mine and gave it a once over last night. It looks like it comes with a SATA hard disk (a Western Digital WD2500BEVT). I've got to say though that it's still a very nice machine for the money and I'll try to keep it and just see if they'll offer a discount or something for the incorrect specification ;-)
#38
I have just spoke to Tesco Customer service regarding the SSD drive it claims to have on laptop they offered me a £40 discount (goodwill gesture) for their mistake or I could return it. £40 is the most they can take of it if I wanted more I would need to write in and complain.

I asked him if I wanted to return it then surely they will have to replace it with one of the same spec they advertised for the Lenovo G550 for the price I paid. They are to get back to me in 10 minutes once they have checked out the spec and let me know what they can replace it with - so we will see what they come up with.
#39
Customer Service called back to say that they don't have one that matches the specification on Tesco Direct therefore can't offer a replacement. I asked if I could get someone else more techie to have a look for me he said to go ahead and get back to him later today. Got his ID number and extension. He admitted he didn't have a clue what a SSD drive is so gave him the definitions from here!! I'm afraid that didn't leave me much faith in him checking for another laptop with similar spec what do you think? Also if I don't find another laptop I could accept the £40 off or I can get a full refund in store.

Could someone help me look for another Tesco Direct laptop with similar spec please??:? I took a long time choosing this laptop and asked around for the best spec for my budget (£329) so was well pleased when this one came up claiming it had an SSD. Tesco have said that it definitely is a mistake and will be rectified online shortly.

With the £40 refund I doubt you'll find better. Seems a good spec, especially with free Win 7 upgrade. Only downer is lack of dual core.

edit: T4200 processor is dual core, got it wrong.
