are these actually any good?

I wouldnt mine a netbook or a notbook as they quite compact and easy to carry around.
#2
The build quality will be a lot better than most of the popular cheap netbooks (it is made by Lenovo, company that make the thinkpad). And it has a 12" WXGA screen, just right for me. I like my laptops portable so I can carry them around. I had the acer aspire one that stopped working after a year! So thought I'd invest more next time. Had my eyes on these but thought £450 was a bit much for it then discovered the price drop today.

Still retails for over £400 on Ebuyer. I know it is Windows XP but will upgrade to "genuine" Windows 7 once it gets delivered!
#3
Hot from me, worth a punt.
#4
I'd be tempted by the "White Cover" version.
£100 extra for better graphics with more RAM and disk space.
#5
Because it's 12" the screen will be a lot better than most netbooks, but you also have to compromise on size and weight. The Atom N270 is really slow and if you want to install Win 7 you would need extra RAM.

+1 - But it will still be a good runner for working off of; myself I have a Samsung N140 (Intel Atom N270 CPU) and it does pretty much everything I throw at via Linux, Windows XP and 7.

I'm surprised this isn't any hotter than it is just now - hell even I'm considering purchasing one but it's more for the screen size and also the bigger keyboard! ;)

BTW this model can also be Hackintoshed as well to run Mac OS X on it - it's not going to be a speed demon but the screen resolution will help greatly towards a better user experience.

Here's a few online reviews for this model but note they also link into the NVIDA ION based model as well (they share the same hardware except for the graphics card component), so please bear that in mind when looking at them along with the testing results.

There's a user community forum as well in place - covers the whole gambit from general support, through to hardware upgrades, hardware hacking and dual/multiple OS booting.

Sorry, but what does the upgrade to Genuine windows 7 refer to?
#12
They don't even mention the weight. What is it?
#13
Thanks Scotty Boy for all the info

@ mOObs I already have a Windows 7 USB prepared to overwrite the windows XP when I get it. Like I said I had an aspire one which packed up and had it running windows 7 smoothly. Build quality on the aspire one is pants and did not stand the test of time.

Oh, so your genuine widows 7 upgrade comes from the dead aspire? Or is it not genuine and not an upgrade then?

Does it really matter at the end of the day? :)

Anyone know how many RAM slots these have?
#18
@ m00bs its windows 7 and genuine* to me

It should be a single DIMM slot, which will be accessible via a removable cover on the bottom but you can only install a 2GB DIMM to replace the 1GB DIMM already in place.

Just ordered this for a christmas present. Thanks :)

God, this nearly gave me a heart attack! I am currently selling my Lenovo S12 with the ION Graphics and I thought id priced my netbook to high, tho ive realised now this is the non-ion version with less Ram and windows XP so I think the extra £30 ive listed mine for is worth it!

I think this has the same chassis as the Ion one, and it is a very solid netbook so I voted hot

Nice price. Shame the white one isn't just £50 more.

Free delivery on these?
#23
How does it compare to the NC10? The same except bigger screen? Anyone tried or had both?
Thanks.

Is Quidco not just for Thinkpad ?
#26
Before anyone gets carried away I suggest that a visit to the forum on the lenovo site is worth a look. There seems to be a great deal of discussion re: shipping problems
#27
mega bargain! all website will look great on this, for example yahoo mail doesnt run properly on 10 inch netbooks, but will on this. wish i could get rid of my msi wind for this!
#29
I've got the white cover version, fantastic machine with no problems so far. Almost had a heart attack as well when I thought they'd knocked off £150 from when I bought mine :P

Good find - there are alternatives out there but the bulk of them will be at least another £30.00p plus and that doesn't include delivery costs to be added on.
#31
Hmm, I'm tempted to upgrade from my NC10 to one of these because I'm after something with a slightly bigger screen.

But I'll probably wait till after Christmas, see what the sales bring.

hot from me
#32
anyone know how much it weighs?
#33
Excellent price but not exactly a 'netbook' with a 12" screen and 1.6kg, more like just a small laptop but without a cd/dvd drive.

Possibly, but its showing as a pending transaction on the card, so they obviously approved it.. maybe stock? I emailed them to find out (not that i should have to contact them...)

Is this a tablet PC as in one where you have a pen to write on the screen?

Answering my own question, no. That is the S10 not S12.
#40
Quite like the look of this, but its OS is XP,so is it worth it as it would cost me £80 for Win 7 plus extra memory. XP seems quite dated now,and i have heard Microsoft are about to stop supporting it. I mainly want a laptop for surfing, some word processing, downloading music and films oh and watching occasional film, via TV connection. My main PC is Vista but unfortunatley it has no back up dvd,its all on seperate partition on HD,otherwise i would put Vista on the Lenovo,ok ok i know some don't like Vista but its been ok for me.
