So don't upgrade it, it's a new machine without any data on it to keep, so install if from scratch!

On what basis do you get this tripe from - on a celeron processor maybe but not c2s which is even better power management than my Lenovo R400 C2D work laptop which i use daily rarely running battery down or charging fully yet when charged fully gets 6 hours use and thats running virtual machines on it.
I suggest that you check your facts before putting people off.:x

hmm, not exactly glowing. Shame as I could have gone for this.

The CPU is the big let down. Sony got powerful core 2 duo processor in super thin sized laptop like Z, SR and TT series. Lenovo should have done the same. No wonder people are paying premium for SONY.

For £399? No. So your point is that you can spend two, three, four times as much and get a better laptop?

Is that your best point or do you have some more?:whistling:

£400 and 1.4Ghz single core...isn't this really slow for the money?

This a new class of thin and light laptops that use CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) CPUs which are very expensive compared to Atoms and cheaper laptop CPUs. The CPU in this one lists at $262 and is only 5.5W. Personally I’d go for a Pentium Dual Core SU4100 (1.30GHz, 800MHz, 2MB) which is 10W but dual core and should list for less than the single core in this!

The idea is that they weigh only a bit more than a 12" Netbook but have performance closer to a laptop. Other examples are Dell's Inspiron 11z and 13z. I think it's an interesting new class of machine if the price is right.

Battery Life in Hours is 5, i don't believe it. My laptop battery life is 3 hours enough. And the processor isn't ideal.
So this price can buy a better one.
#24
Very light and good all-round, good brand, will handle 720p movies/BBC HD iPlayer/etc easily, however, at this price level there are better ‘older’ options if you want a proper laptop. Netbook-wise – a solid choice. Hot.

What do you have in mind around the same weight, 1.6Kg, at this price?

Not brilliant but it has 3mb of Cache, 800 MHz of FSB and only uses 5.5W of power.

Much much superior to the ATOM processors which are about. Put XP on it and it would destroy any netbook you threw at it. and that is a FACT!

We use Lenovo machine's at work and you could get 3 hours tops when they are new. However I have found the batteries last 6 months, maybe a year tops before they are knackered and can hardly hold any charge. Currently my machine says it has 90mins battery life when it is fully charged!

Still it looks like a nice machine for the money.

You are correct; it - just like you - does not have a CD drive.

and you have first hand personal experience of more than one of these do you?

I have maintained a "fleet" of hundreds of Lenovo laptops and even an old R51 and T42's are still on their original batteries and hold charge for a couple of hours!

Acer Aspire 5536 for £399.99 - almost identical to this but without bluetooth. 500GB hard-drive though

Hmmm... except the amount of RAM - which part is identical - or at least similar?

Note to get Windows 7 onto this, it will cost you £17 and a long wait for shipping!

Lenovo coyly state ...

The Windows 7 Upgrade license is free for qualifying PCs. Only materials, shipping, handling, and fulfillment fees may be included in the cost of the upgrade program. If any fees apply, the amount will be presented to you prior to final submission of your order. At that time, you will have the opportunity to opt out before final order submission.

Note also there are reported issues with fan noise, battery life and performance - see

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/bd-p/ideaPad

The beauty of netbooks is that they are cheap and cheerful - and expectations are not high.

When you pay around £400 expectations are set higher and need to be fulfilled!

Folks here are far too quick to praise without knowing the facts.

estimated 5 hour battery life? compared to estimated 3 on the acer?
13.3" screen? compared to the 15.6"?

fair enough you may feel that your getting more for your money... its an unfair comparision when both laptops are aimed at different markets...

Exactly, the differences are lost on some people.

First, specs are not the only criteria, the build-quality of Lenovo / IBM is legendary (which is not so say that somebody hasn’t had a bad experience).

I have a T60 and the battery is still in great condition. One thing though: I have it set to only start charging if the battery drops below 94% since there’s no point using up the batteries finite charge-cycles charging the battery when it’s being used on mains if the battery loses a bit of charge (say down to 99%).
#37
Lol..

Do not think this as a LAPTOP or DESKTOP replacement..
why do you even bother to compare the price with an Acer?????

You should be comparing this with Samsung NC10 etc... this is a bigger, better, but still MUCH lighter LAPNETBOOK... that will do pretty much everything you want it to do apart from games or graphics etc etc...

This is actually quite hot, for a 13.3inch screen (fairly large) and light and thin laptop...
#38
ohh and this is not expensive if you think how much people were paying for a Samsung NC10 when it came out..

this one is by far BETTER and MUCH more superior than NC10...

okok... less battery hours... BUT, much more powerful and much bigger screen..... ohh and did I see DDR3 RAM too? and 3Mb Cache???

it will last 5hrs I believe cos this is now a standard C2D, the processor was designed with low voltage in mind.. ur everyday average laptop may have 2 hrs life, but this one for sure will have longer than that... I have a Lenovo S10-2.... easily 6-7hrs...... and I have had it for 3-4months now

I can't help feeling that this site would be a better place if people followed Agharta's mode of response, (except when it comes to P&P to NI...........:whistling:) Rep added nevertheless. ;-)
