Nah I was just browsing for a 1080p LCD TV and found this one at PRC which looked like a good price.

Way, way, way, way too small for 1080p, unless you plan to sit 5 feet away, in which case it's nice.

Otherwise, get a 720p plasma.

I am thinking about getting a new TV. 37" is in my opinion big enough for me as I do not want a TV to be the focal point and to dominate the living room.

I am interested in the Samsung 37" 1080p but from what you are saying i'd probably be wasting my money as the TV will be about 10 to 12 ft away. Is this because the detail will be lost over that kind of distance?

yep. If you want 1080p then go for a 42" or more:thumbsup:

also, dont get sucked into the tv marketing machine!! i was looking at 1080p displays, and just because it has a high res, dont mean its a better picture;-)

I think you guys are forgetting that this is True HD, no resolution upscaling.

I've read all about the 1080i vs 1080p debate at AV Forums, but it logically has to be better!

better if its a comparison between the same make that is?

A 1080i pioneer tv will be better than a beko 1080p dont you think?

all i'm saying is that if your looking for as tv, use your eyes not the specs offered!

Yup. With 20/20 vision, you need at minimum a 60" TV at 11 feet to see any benefit of 1080p - any further and your eyes are physically incapable of seeing the extra pixels. Ideally you want 70" at this distance to see full benefit (3.5 times larger screen than a 37"!). If you can arrange your seating so that it's 8 feet away, you still need at least a 50".

However, with 720p the ideal distance is much more practical - for a 37" you're still looking at 8 feet ideal though. For 50" 720p, 10.5 feet is spot on, so I'd be hunting around for that in your situation. Plasmas also generally give a better picture than LCDs in terms of brightness and particularly contrast - it's only resolution they lag in, and that's not relevant unless you sit close enough.

Of course, sitting further away then ideal doesn't do any really harm, you're just not getting the benefit of your expensive new set. At 10-12 feet with a 42", you could probably even go for a 480p set (aka SDTV) and not lose anything in resolution. However, 720p plasmas have fallen so much in price there's no real benefit doing that.

ps all distances above are for 20/20. If you have sharper eyes than that, the distances get larger. Fuzzier, they get smaller.

So the best bet then would be to buy a Panasonic TH37PX70PED (1080i) PLASMA from from TribalUK through Shop.com (7% Quidco) for £658.44 delivered!!!

:pirate: CJ :pirate:

EDIT: Or Currys £636 (panel only) less 5% YAW code, 5% Quidco, final price £572.40

Then get the pedestal from John Lewis (£99) using the £20 off a £100 spend voucher and 3% (at least Quidco), final price £76.03

Final (Potential) Price for the Panasonic TH37PX70PED £648.43.

I've had this TV for about two weeks now and am very impressed with it. My laptop through VGA at 1920x1080 is great, now I just need a wireless keyboard and mouse to be able to use it, rather than just watch it from the couch.

I bought it from Dixons and between vouchers, egg and quidco I got it delivered for a shade over £600. Probably could have got it cheaper with a 5% voucher rather than the £25 one. Only thing is I've still waiting for my quidco to be paid. Shame I missed happy hour :(

PS, I also bought a Samsung LE26R88BD and XBOX 360 component performance at 720p on it is very poor compared to the LG set at 1080p. The resolution isn't the problem, its the colours. The samsung is just very dark and over saturated. Even the great settings thread on AVForums doesn't help. Think I need to buy a VGA cable.

Good for ps3 or as a monitor. Stay well away if its for watching sd tv tho. Most of the picture will be 'made up'.
