.VOB file support was removed in the latest firmware due to licensing issues btw, renaming it to .mpg usually works though. No it doesn't support iPlayer incase you are wondering.

if you can stream to it from a NAS then i would buy this straight away!

Not sure about that preacher, you'd have to google it and hope for some info.
#4
Will it play files from a network share?

"MKV will will only output in 50hz Pal mainly.

So if you... ahem.... 'acquire' USA TV shows in NTSC (60hz) then they stay in PAL and look awful and judder."

Sounds a bit flaky to me, I'll save my cash.

i've had the 565 for a few months and find it very good. i play a lot of mkv files from usa sitcoms and avi's and much larger, 10gb+ BR mkv files all straight from my hd and have never had any problems with judders or such. bridged it using my laptop wireless connection and plays you tube fine too

Can this play mkv files from usb flash stick too?

@normal yes as long as its formatted as FAT32 or NTFS.

Much better off paying the extra £5 for the Sony BDP-S370.... Built in iplayer, Plays MKV's etc like this and works a dream with my Qnap Nas... Picks up DLNA and Upnp

the Sony can't play from NTFS formatted usb devices and therefore can't play 4.4gb or 7.8gb .mkv files without them being split into 4gb chunks.

This may work with DLNA and Upnp i haven't checked as i don't need those.

It does have gigabit lan though (this doesn't) so can handle HD files comfortably over network.... I have an 8tb network set up and have one of the Sony BDP-S370 in every spare room connected, works flawlessly...

This does look good but I think the Sony has the edge.... The LG is obviously the better choice if you want to play HD files from an external HD.... I have had an LG product before and the video performance has been very poor so that needs checking out before deciding if this is worth buying, the reviews suggest not....

Just read another review saying the LG has cinavia working well....BAD POINT.... means future pirated movies won't work (only karate kid and wolfman at the moment but more will follow). The Sony still plays when cinavia is there (google cinavia)
suspended#13
1080p .mkv files don't fully utilise the throughput of 100mbit, so gigabit offers no advantage at all. The LG doesn't have cinavia built in, i've had people test it and i also asked LG:

Dear Mr X,

Thank you for your email,

No this unit does not have Cinavia built-in protection.

Best regards,

Also there's no guarantee Sony won't add Cinavia as its in the Sony PS3 since firmware 3.10.

Ok, I want a Blu Ray player to watch Blu Ray ripps in MKV format from a UBS stick.

Which of the Blu Ray players would give me the best picture quality?

LG BD560 or the Samsung BD-C5300

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-bd-c5300-blu-ray-player-6-b/748389?ppp=40

Thanks

no optical digital
Go for samsung c5300 similar price plays usb sticks/hard drives FAT & NTFS also recognizes diferent partitions and seperates drives.
I havent tested the LG but i can confirm the samsung played a 8gb book of eli MKV file on a ntfs formated usb hard drive flawlessly.

p.s the samsung comes with free films

the samsung can do all of those things too. The LG has coaxial digital out only, the samsung has optical digital out only, it depends what type of amp he has or whether he will be using hdmi for audio or just stereo.

So the BDP-S370 does this out of the box? Any limitations I should know of? It will just access a network share?

Answered my own question, I'll stick with the Popcorn players: http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-players/1296053-sony-bdp-s370-owners-thread-part-2-a-3.html
