Introducing the GGW-H20L, supporting the next generation of optical disc formats. The Blu-ray disc format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. Not only can you record, rewrite and playback the BD format, you can also read and play HD-DVDs. The drive is also capable of burning DVDs and features the Lightscribe labelling function.

Saw a few posts around for the non writers for around £110-ish. For £40 more you can have the future proofness of Blu-Ray writeability, for the when the media starts to come down, which it inevitably will.

Hi guys,
My advice is to wait if you can. These type of products drop like a stone in price over a few months. I found this when DVD was the hot product of the month.
Look at the cost of them now! You can get a good one for about £20.
The BD media is far too expensive at the moment too.
I don't think there is a copy protection hack for BD either is there?

Hi, does anyone know roughly how long it would take to burn a full 25GB disc?

First, it can write to dual-layer BD-R discs. With current 2x media, it took an hour to half-fill a 50GB disc, but the drive is capable of 4x writing, so expect that to halve once high-speed discs are available. For single-layer BD-R discs, LG claims a 6x write speed, and we were able to fill a 25GB disc in 21mins 19secs. Writing to DVD was quicker than with Pioneer's drives, the drive filling a DVD+R in just under six minutes and a DVD+RW in just over seven minutes. Writing to dual-layer discs took an unremarkable 27 minutes, though.
