Id be tempted to pay another 30 quid and get the same model with floorstanding front speakers - http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/lg-ht805ph-5-1-ch-home-cinema-system-04895286-pdt.html

I've had one of these with the 2x Tallboyspeakers for 6 months I bought for £149 from Dixons I think it was. Pretty pleased with them. Hardly use the DVD player for it.

Only one criticism is that I have a PS3 as well so you will need to invest in an optical switch and 3x leads to switch between the different devices manually.

If you want surround sound prob best with a dedicated amp, sub, speaker set up imo. Its the same just without the DVD player. There are some setups around with an amp built into the subwoofer, They aren't as sophisticated as dedicated amps but if you have a decent sound card that'll do the work then it'll work just as well.

FFS - I bought one 4 weeks ago for £130.

It's good, but not amazing. For £100 its satisfactory though.

+ discreeet
+ optical works fine
+ usb DIVX etc is a nice feature
+ typical confusing surround settings (Jazz, rock, pop etc.)

- speakers are a little bigger than rival models, and a little ugly IMHO. They can't be stacked on their side.
- sounds is good, but quite 'boomy' - the 5.1 on my 360 is great.
- fiddly setup and only runs 5.1DD - had to fiddle with my BR to get it to work

remember that no HDMI or optical is included in the box

I would reccomend searching ebxy for a 'three optical switch' as I paid £10 for a switch and 3 optical leads in one go. Really makes it easy to switch etc. rather than playing with leads.

Also, beware that Currys will try and upsell you optical leads/HDMIs etc. They tried to sell me an optical lead for £30... On the plus side, while they dig it out at the store, have a walk around for manager specials, as I saved 50% on my microwave...

Hi - quick question. I bought my dad an LG blu ray player recently, but he still uses his old HTIB DVD system because he'd rather have the surround sound than HD visuals!! If he bought this set, could he connect the blu-ray player to it via the optical in?

Yes, providing your BR has an optical output. This is the main plus of this unit - the optical input. Many similar products at this price don't have this functionality

If we are following the accepted rule of thumb and spending 10% of purchase price on cabling I would be inclined to reccommend one of these as the perfect partner....but each to their own :)

What does it matter with a digital output?

Optical DIGITAL cable. 1 or 0. Not 0.8 or 0.3. It will work or it won't. This isn't like a HDMI cable where with longer (over 3m) cables, quality becomes an issue, this is a simple case of it'll work or it won't.

Here's what I might do - go buy this, and when they try to upsell me a £30 optical cable, ask them if it would sound better than one from the pound shop. Then when they LIE TO MY FACE to get their commission, I will pull out my pound shop cable and ask them to compare the two with a demo right there and then. I'll tell him that if he can guess which cable I'm using three times in a row correctly, I'll buy the damn £30 cable. If he can't then I get to punch him in his lying little face.
