This excellent phone would have cost £400 a few years ago:

1. 240x480 3" screen
2. Touchscreen control (no stylus)
3. Metal scroll wheel for alternative menu control
4. Also fast key to menu wheel
5. 3G and fastest HSDPA with 7.2mbits max
6. MicroSDHC slot
7. Slider with proper numeric keypad (or you can use touchscreen pad)
8. 3MP camera with flash and auto-focus
9. LG software syncs with outlook and allows some multimedia control and use of phone as modem (software actually worked properly on my Vista x64 machine - hooray!)
10. Forward and back facing Camera
11. Includes headphone adaptor with volume dial and allows normal headphones to be connected.
12. Includes USB cable (custom LG connection) and mains adaptor.

I will say that the touch screen takes some getting used to. But once you have its pretty good.

thx, just changed

Hmm, am trying to buy this, but on the O2 website, it says I have to choose one of their 'tarrifs' which seem to me to basically be a 'contract', i.e. you have to top up by a certain amount each month.

Cannot the phone just be used like a normal pay as you go, with it being your own chocie how much or how little you top up over however long a time period you wish?

If not, anyone know where else this phone can be bought for a comparable price? Of course, unlocked would be best.
#4
that is pay as you go - the 'tariff' things are bonuses which you get if you top up 30 quid a month.
the actual tariff itself is free.
if you dont top up 30 quid then its just normal pay as you go.
as far as i can see anyway.

nothing hot about this deal!!!!

There are a few places on the web. I am trying to find a cheap one, so far the cheapest I have found is £25.
I assume that one of those "dodgy" unlock shops (of which there are loads around london) would be able to do it. All recent LG phones seem to work on the same mechanism. They normally change £10-£15. Will update this thread when i have found one.

nothing hot about this deal!!!!

You'll have to elaborate on that.

I can see a few problems with it in the review - but seems an impressive phone for the money, think it would keep the wife happy.

If anyone has opinions on better phones in the same kind of price bracket - please post them, or I think I'll be going for this...

That is a good question. This is not an HTC diamond or an iPhone (although it does have a removable card).

I have found it excellent for;
1. Phone calls. Good quality and clear.
2. Listening to music (the volume control and normal headphone socket on the remote is great). the quality is not as good as my zune or iriver, but better then the iphone (well at least my one).
3. The screen is nice
4. The web browsing is ok. Particularly on landscape
5. google maps works ...
6. The scroll wheelis great.
7. love the keyboard

Where it is limited:
7. Touch interface can be annoying at times
8. Whilst it is mostly snappy, sometimes it can be sluggish, particularly compiling music lists when I have updated my 8gb SD card.
9. There is no "classic phone ring" ringtone. Why do so many phone manufacturers do that these days. I just like a normal phone ring, not some stupid pop song. Rant over ......

I think a good alternative to consider is the HTC Touch from orange for £150 or the Samsung Steel for £129 from vodafone (neither are 3G).

I think that there is nothing currently with this screen size, design and 3G in this price bracket.

If you have more money there are a lot of great phones, but most are over £250. Have a look at www.expansys.com

hmm never really want to spend anything about £5 unlocking a mobile, would be nice if there was some kind of code method but chances are slim.
#13
thanks for the review Colonel, very helpful for prospective buyers.
#14
funny how you get annoyed it doesnt have a standard ringtone - not many phones these days do! but im sure you can download one for free if you need to look old skool on toast

no, you need to pay £109. However you can just put your sim in and use as normal.
Note the marshall ward voucher which would reduce by £30 ONLY if its your first order with them

I have had a few smart phones since they appeared - and if they did what they were meant to then it would be great. But none did.

Weird things - like the phone would hang for 30sec prior to making calls, or reset its clock (which sorted new taxt messages back to 2007) - the wrong sender number would be assigned to text messages, the microphone would switch off during calls. On one it took well over 2 mins from switching on to being able to make a call - and it was switched off often - as if it was allowed to run low on power could take 30 mins charge before it could be switched on again.

Two of the phones were by HTC - and both featured in the PC pro best buy list. So I guess they worked the day they were tested.

I have returned to a basic phone - and its so good to be able to pick it up and make a call that works for the entire call - and the battery can last the best part of a week.

That is a good point. Smart phones can be hit and miss, which is why I always carry a small normal phone and a PDA.

The LG KF700 in my view is not a smart phone, in the sense it has a custom os. It does what it does well, but can not be expanded or tweaked like a symbian or windows mobile phone.

I am currently carrying a Blackberry Bold for my PDA and email activities, and the KF700 as my talking phone and MP3 music player.

I'm on O2 PAYG but I can't see any option when checking out to get this phone reduced to £99.99.
How do you you get the discount?

You could invest in one of these
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12167
It will unlock any phone, and when you change to another phone you just take it out and use it in that.

I am seriously tempted by this, if it had wifi I would definetally buy it. I've always wanted a smart phone for symbian applications, but after a few months I barely use any of the programs, and my phone just ends up being used to call and text people. £99 seems a great price for a touchscreen phone, need a new phone, but not sure if I really need to spend this much. Hot deal anyway.

Sorry for double posting, but the tarrifs you speak of when you add to your basket are pay as you go, you are not tied in to a contract. Its up to you how much you top up, I have a text anytime sim which is good because you get 300 free texts when you top up a tenner. Also I have a question for the OP, have you used opera mini on this phone? I've read theres a few problems with the web browser, would be great if opera mini could be used instead.

2 Questions... I saw this in the shop today, and it was the same price, but with £10 top up, making it £109.99. Could I say I have a sim card, and just get £10 off? Or could the £10 be put on my current sim?

And the other thing, what else might I want to consider? I miss my Windows Mobile/Smartphone PDA devices, but not sure what is out there at a similar price point, or up to £150. Any ideas? Think I'll go for this though, as sometimes the Smartphones are unreliable.

I like the look of the Samsung Tocco, but presume I can't get that anywhere near this price?

This seems like a good deal but i have a few questions:

*Could i get Sat Nav on this phone?
*I am currently on a Virgin sim only contract, if i get the phone unlocked could i use the 3G features?
*Is the keypad touch screen or are they buttons?

Rep will be left if anyone can help me.

The screen is touch screen, but there is a normal keypad. Can't help on the rest though, sorry
#27
Oh, that was the other thing I wanted to ask... I have topped up loads, and you can redeem that off the price of the phone normally, can't you? What number do I call for that, to see how much I have to redeem? Can I redeem it in store, or online, at all?
#28
Can anyone help me with the above questions?

This does not have GPS, so I don't think sat nav is possible, but it does come loaded with google maps. You could buy one of those bluetooth gps attachments if you really wanted it.
I posted an unlocking device from dealextreme a few pages up, I had a 3G phone that was locked to three, but I use an 02 sim with this device and it can still use the 3g signal, so if this phone was unlocked I don't see why not. However I think your sim has to be 3g first, but it should work.
The keypad is actual buttons.
Hope that helps a bit.

Can anyone CONFIRM that it has google maps pre-installed? As in, I don't have to connect to the internet to use it, and it works just like the internet version.

Thats not possible, you always have to connect to the internet to use google maps, it just means the application comes on the phone.

what a phone i got mine today, this is amazing everything about it is great, the camera and flash are good. But the fact that you can use so many different input methods is the best point . Great!
