The camera, battery life and the general design of the phone (boring?) seem to be the common niggles but, otherwise, it seems to score a constant 4/5 in most reviews. There's even a planned Jelly Bean release for early next year. Having been the previous owner of both Motorola and HTC smartphones, however, I won't hold my breath until I actually see it!

I dunno, I have an optimus 7, had it 10 months now. It's been booted around something awful, as all my phones do. It's still going strong.
My Galaxy s2 lasted 3 weeks under the same conditions.
Only phone I've had that was better built is the HTC hero.
Yeah my speaker went after 6 months, and now its gone 2 months getting fixed, still haven't got it back, madness
Having gone from the Galaxy S to the Galaxy Nexus - two very heavily supported devices over on the XDA forums - I'm surprised at how happy I am with this phone, considering there is so little support for it.
it is great phone IF you are computer geek
i have 2x and it is almost unusable OOTB, but once you root, flash some customized rom and tweak it a bit it actually is a brilliant phone for the money
that said lg announced ICS for 2x for second quarter of 2012 and they still didn't released it (except for su660 which is korean version of 2x with different hardware) so don't count that you will be happy with those phones if you don't know what baseband, ril, rooting or cwm is...

It is a tough market though. Do you have a big group of guys working on Android development which aren't really revenue generating or do you focus on getting the latest hardware out into the market which does directly impact the bottom line. LG have clearly gone down the latter route whereas I think there has to be a balance. Android is such a fast past OS, too fast paced for some, that you cannot ignore the fact that phones released 3-6 months ago will require plenty of support going forward. Neglecting existing customers is a risky business.
Note, I've got a Galaxy S2. Excellent phone and it has received decent software updates so far. If it gets Jelly Bean I might not need to get another phone for another 6-12 months - I'll probably skip the S3. As to whether Samsung have the balance right is down to which stakeholder group you are in.
As for the lack of support, LG have released 3 updates to the phone thus far resolving issues with the video camera and the erratic focusing which now works a treat. The handset has remained stable and extremely fast. Changes to brightness and tweaks to notification icons. And updates to the processor to increase battery life and reduce heat, so in my eyes LG are listening to the new users because the variants are more unified helping in the support of the handsets.
My other half had the LG Optimus 2X and was cursing me for getting the 4X but after playing with my phone decided they wanted one as well.
I know LG have been knocked for the slow updates but at the moment I have a phone that really rocks at everything I throw at it and if I put it in battery saving mode I've had just under 3 days from a single charge. Speaking of charging my Samsung Galaxy S2 use to take 5 hours to get to 100% (not sure if anyone else had a slow charging one), however the LG cracks along and is fully charged in a little over an hour which is something I can't be happier about.
Great price for what I think is an exceptional phone and one I have no problem recommending (even for an LG).
