Sam Tyler (John Simm - State of Play) is a driven and ambitious young detective who is determined to keep the streets of 21st Century Manchester safe. But after a near fatal car accident, Sam wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973, struggling to understand what's real. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane? What follows is Sam's 21st century account of Seventies life feeling like a fish out of water. He must come to terms with an unfamiliar environment and an archaic CID unit where, using his modern know-how, he is integral to the unit's investigation process as he learns how to adapt to their old-fashioned technologies and etiquettes. Sam's new boss is hard-nosed DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister - Vincent), who gets results by trusting his gut instinct and sheer brute force. Strangely the pair make a good team... Contains the complete Series 1.

BBC FOUR start showing series one next week-2 episodes per week i think.

I reckon that once BBC FOUR have finished showing the whole of series one,BBC ONE will start showing series two-probably next month!

Basicaly it's about a copper who gets knocked over ....wakes up 30 years before he was knocked over, and continues being a copper.....Meets his Mother & father ...I won't tell you any more !
If you remember the 70's you MUST get this classic ....a great buy for the future....Can't wait for series 2 !!

Series 1 was on BBC1 straight off and with its popularity I was expecting the same.

Oh, it has! Best thing BBC has done in ages... still can't believe that series two is going to be the last one.

Surely better than outstaying it's welcome & going downhill as SO MANY have done before!?!?!?!

There is a thread about the starting date here:

Yes, but it's only had one season to date, it could start to go downhill after 2 seasons or after 8. It's surely too early to judge.

Its a great series and Philip Glenister - who I hadn't heard of before - is simply fantastic. I don't watch TV and had I not picked up the torrents I'd have missed it. Definitely one not to miss.

I thought the first series was very good but was a little disappointed that the coma turned it into a bit of a lame excuse to make a Sweeney spoof retro soap opera.

For me one series would've been enough, especially as they were just about to switch of his life support. They could've made series 2 up to date.

Loved the first season & sure i'll love the 2nd, but it's a very 'different' & novel idea & these are SOMETIMES very hard to sustain. I not saying it couldn't last into series 4, 5, 6 or 7 but personally, I don't think it would.
In a (halfway) similar vein Quantum Leap managed to hold it's own for a while but trailed off towards the end & while i'm sure there were many that loved the X-files to the last, there are many others that feel this, along with so many shows really outstayed it's welcome (generally due to the money they brought in).
It is a great show but so was Fawlty Towers which ran for 2 seasons/series (Porridge for 3) & is still shown, loved & talked about to this day.

As said Rayman, a Drama made by the same people who make Spooks.
Each episode is well written, all music used except start up titles are from the 70's and yes it does have some comedy!

I can only hope that the writers have not lost the touch and perhaps bettered what we have seen already.
I just hope that they don't abuse this programme and go to far with it.

Agreed, Philip Glenister was born to play that part.
I think the first series won an International Emmy for best drama (or something like that)

According to Wikipedia, there is to be spin-off series made called Ashes to Ashes (no prizes for guessing why), catching up with the lives of Gene Hunt & co in 1981. As long as Philip Glenister is in it, it should be good. :)

Agree!
Some top telly watching to come then.
Notice that none of it, so far, is coming from ITV:?
