If your a bit of a geek like me I think you will like this deal.

In store at Tesco's on the clearance section. I went looking for the earlier posted 80gb ext hard drives at £7.50 and spotted these. Plenty left too.

Basically this allows to add a USB hard drive or pen drive to your wired network. Can be modded to allow a host of extra features, print server, web server, etc, even has its own wiki!

I bought mine for £45 back then before its end of life. Those are amazing little things! You wouldn't believe all they can do, basically they are proper servers running on a thin machine:
- file server, obviously
- iTunes server
- email server
- eMule / BitTorrent server
- UPnP media-streaming server
- FTP server

Some have managed to modify the hardware to graft extra components, such as more memory, internal storage, extra USB ports, even LCD displays... There is a whole community out there, very helpful and most experienced as this is an older product. You can run several versions of Linux on it and lift some of the limitations that come with the original firmware, in particular the necessity to format your drives in Ext3 (Linux format, not Windows-compatible) as even with the firmware upgrade to allow support for FAT32 / NTFS, many drives are still not recognised.
On the other hand, you can do just as I did, i.e. install Ext3 drivers for XP and then solve your problem.

It's not all perfect though, to be honest, as there are some severe limitations. The first one is that the network type supported here is Fast Ethernet (100Mbps max), so practically it takes hours to transfer large batches of files. However I got used to launching my backups and large file transfers before I go to bed. It's still largely enough to stream music or movies. Other point, the default firmware hardly supports Windows file formats but as I said, there are workarounds. In any case, for a fiver, just see for yourself...

But of course, you can also leave it as it is and use it as a network adapter to transform your USB hard drives into NAS storage that you can access from just anywhere on your network and with the appropriate settings, even from outside through Internet. That alone is priceless, so for just over £5... BARGAIN!
As you would expect it's absolutely silent and very gently on the power supply. Given that it does the job of a fully-fledged server, that's really good.

Repeating myself but at that price, this is such a steal! That's the most wonderful little toy you can get for your network and/or your storage. The possibilities are almost endless. I would give it 100 degrees right away if I could, but failing that here are 9 degrees of heat and some well deserved rep'.

Extraordinary find, thanks! Shame there's no Tesco around here, I would've got a spare one just in case at this price, and experiment with it. Oh well...
#38
unbelieveable, I was going to fork out 40 quid for this on ebay only just last month! I'll check the local tescos out (long eaton), but if it isn't available, I'd love to buy it off someone with extra money on top.
#39
D'oh I should have got my request in first, ahh well just checked Stafford, none there so same goes for me if anyone would be so kind to get me one I will pay p&p and a bit extra and be eternally grateful
#40
