Really should start buying parts for a HTPC, but my macbook pro is doing the job good for now.
Its just XBMC Eden does not support HD audio for the macbook yet.

Excellent a deal where my local PC World has actually got these in stock.

Same here for all the stores in and near Teesside. Just took the plunge as was going to do this last week but would of had to wait till I was back home, glad I didn't order last week now. :)

Just popped next door and it is a 12mm drive as opposed to the 9mm
Gutted but I think I've just found a sata to usb cable on eBay for £4 which will do the trick
Given that I always have a 2.5" drive in an enclosure in that bay anyway...makes sense getting this drive and using it as an external

Im gonna assume it requires third party software to play blu-ray films - often many people complain mistaking a blu-ray drive as a blu-ray movie player.

I think VLC can play it
Thanks for the deal - just bought it!

12mm is the standard for laptop ODD drives, 9mm tends to be on panasonic, apple and IBM machines and not all of them use this form factor.

As for playback of blurays VLC should play them fine

I don't believe VLC or any free software will play Blu Ray movies.

Please someone prove me wrong as I lost that ability on my acer laptop when installing Windows 7, i.e. lost the acer arcade deluxe software that did play blu ray movies. I tried VLC but it did not work.

Should be great for playing blu-ray disc's via your media player

Officially, VLC doesn't play commercial Blu-Rays (due to the copy protection). However, this exists - http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/

Right, just downloading and installing the official VLC media player - and will test with a blu ray moview....

Are you sure you don't have something like PowerDVD installed also? I've tried the latest VLC on Windows 7 and it won't work for me.

I'll investigate the link storrdoff posted though ;)

Nope, won't play a genuine blu ray movie (Ponyo) under Windows 7 Professional:

This Blu-Ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it.

Yes - I think rammiuk1 and astek123 are confused and have the AACS decoding library via another product.

You can try the unofficial VLC or I believe DAPlayer will also work; these are both in a limited way (no menus and some copy protected movies will not play).
