I am pretty sure my local Asda had their own brand version of a HDMI DVD player for £25 too...

Not voting just yet..

I work at PC World and although it's an 'ok' player..... there are a lot of returns..... be warned! There are better out there for a little bit extra.... This was also £20 around christmas time so may go down again

if its hdmi AND div x must be worht that money surely?
the asda one just hdmi
never seen anyon mention it as playing div x too?

Does anyone know of a DVD player with an HDMI output that can take an input from sky and convert it. I've seen a HDMI/DVD player at Argos with 2 scarts, but it doesnt say what the two scarts are for, ones no doubt output - but is the other input?.

(I'm basically after a cheap sky > HDMI converter!)

I would have thought it would need to be a recorder to do this not a player, as I would also be interested in upscaling my sky cheaply.

I wouldn't trust a cheap DVD upscaler if you have a decent sized TV. I tried my old £30 upscaler from ebuyer (Eltax branded) on my new 32" LG LCD and it looked absolutely awful. Outputting DVDs from my PC to the TV produced a better picture. I recently bought a Pioneer DV600 for £120 and it really was worth the price difference.

Not bad for the price. but i recommend Paying £20 more for a decent budget player.

If any one wants this as a cheep multi region player.
Try this

All you need to do to access region code choice is have the dvd tray in the open position and then press 9735 on the remote control.

The engineer menu will appear on the screen which allowsyou to select the region. Select Region 0 for multiregion, once selected you will not need to do this again.

You need to buy a scaler for this,

I've not seen these budget dvd upscalers in action but it stands to reason that some of the more expensive tv's would upscale the signal better from a normal dvd player.

is this region free or just region 2?

see details above my post tells you how to make player region free

this must be pc world branch specific because it's 29.99 at my local. Also it doesn't say DIV X compatible on the box. Does anyone know a player that is capable of playing .MKV files?
#14
It dosent say much on the box but you search around to find out the details on the web like I have done for you all.
item is region 2 as most DVD's players you buy but if you follow the code i posted you will have a nice region 0(multi region) unit.

BEWARE. Toshiba has just announced that it will be discontinuing production of HDMI players. This means that the de facto standard will be Sony's Blu-Ray. I may be mistaken, but I don't believe that these HDMI players will play Blu-ray discs.
#16
michaelfairburn is confused, this is not a HD-DVD, it has a HDMI interface for connecting to HDMI equipped TVs.

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war has nothing to do with this and this player will play neither. .

Toshiba will still make HDMI players, it is just thinking about dropping HD-DVD which is a format. As mentioned, this player plays neither :p

HDMI is just the standard connector technology for electrical equipment that can pass HD Data. Although these standard DVD players dont do HD they use the HDMI technology to upscale your DVD picture.

It does not play .MKV format. My local PC World has one on dislpay connected to an LCD, so I went back with a DVD burned with xvid/divx and .mkv files. It only played xvid/divx. The .MKV didn't even show up as an unrecognised format.

I'm looking for something that plays .MKV and the most reliable way seems to be to get a cheap barebone PC with a tv out. Unless someone else knows of a good alternative.

i own one and its worth the money the picture is upgraded well and the sound is perfect, i make all my movies regardless of what thy are using convertx to dvd and it plays them. i wont be getting a blue ray player as this does me fine i used a hdmi cable from game and plugged it into my 37 inch lg full hd tv and played the same disc through the normal dvdhome cinema set up and saw a major inprovement . no need to spend to much on a upscaler player as a dvd9 will only upscale so much .
i play all the discs in 1080i not 1080p which is what sky transmitt in only blueray can hold 1080p
