Yeah, just saw this. Not particularly impressed really, why not sell it at this rather than 199 with a voucher? They could have at least waited a week or two so I felt like I had had a bit of a deal. Muppets.

They are completely different products intended for different markets. A bit like saying Sony are crazy as they sell a DVD player for £50 and sell a Blue Ray player for £200.

No they aren't.
They are both MP3 streaming devices for the home.
The Boom has built-in speakers, and the Squeezebox3 doesn't.

I suggest you go and read what these are for at www.slimdevices.com as you obviously haven't a clue. :whistling:

Granted they can both play mp3 files but that's where the similarity ends.

I can assure you I do have a clue as I own one of each:

Since you seem not to have a clue, here's an overview of each from Amazon:
Squeezebox Boom
Squeezebox v3

They are virtually identical in terms of functionality. Granted they look different, but the only real difference is that the Boom has integral speakers, and the Squeezebox3 doesn't.

The point I was originally trying to make is that the Boom has traditionally been the "premium" product & is priced higher than the Squeezebox v3 (or Squeezebox Classic) virtually everywhere - but Amazon are now selling it for £10 less. I was hoping that we might see the non-Boom reduced as well....

No no no and no again. The boom is the bottom of the pile in the product line.

Rewind 10 years and you are saying this (equivalent of the Boom):

is better than this (equivalent of the SB3):

You are seriously misinforming people with your comments.

I have an SB3, a Duet and 2 Booms and can assure anyone reading this that the SB3 and Duet are sonically the same (equivalent to a pretty good HiFi cd player) but the Boom is the equivalent of a ghetto blaster.

You need to be able to serve your music to the squeezebox players - usually from a pc running squeezecenter (a software app that you can download from slimdevices/logitech) or a squeezecenter ready NAS. You can use the boom stand alone to listen to internet radio but you obviously must have an internet connection.

Please please please anyone considering buying one of these go to http://forums.slimdevices.com/ and have a read on the forums so that you understand what you need and how it works.

I have used these products for 3 years and they are superb but can be a pain in the rear to set up if you are not familiar with computers and networks. If you want more info either read the forums or PM me, I'd be happy to help.

But please can we stop the misinformation on what these devices do as the Boom, SB3, Duet and Transporter are all different products created to cater for different needs..

No I'm not.

The original point I made was

Amazon are now in the crazy situation of selling the Squeezebox Boom for £149, and the Squeezebox3 (no speakers) for £159!!

I was simply stating that we have gone from a situation where the Squeezebox Boom, which typically costs £40 to £50 more than the Squeezebox Classic (and still does at most retailers), is now £10 less than the Classic at Amazon.

I accept your point that the Classic and Boom are not the same - I don't think I ever said that they were - and the final sound quality will clearly be determined by what you send the Squeezebox Classic's output to. Link it up to some cheapo £10 speakers and it will probably sound worse than the Boom. Link it up to a few grand's worth of amp & speakers and it will sound much better.

TBF if you hook up your Boom via the headphone socket to an amp, you will get the same functionality & sound quality (as they both have the same Wolfson WM8501 DAC)

The Classic has a much larger display, which is where the money is spent on it (there's a good conversation on this on the slimdevices forums).
