Nice deal, thanks Rayman :)

I bought a set for £100 2nd hand and I wasn't too impressed to be honest.

the earlier Z-560s I think sound much better, although loosing out to a channel.

with the Z-5550s I found the bass very very slow and lumpy.

I honetly beg to differ, I think they're fantastic for their price. Especially when matched up with a decent soundcard such as my HDA Mystique ;-)

I bought mine roughly a year ago from Amazon for £185inc :w00t:

I was running them from a X-Fi Platinum - still sounded poor to me.

I now have an Audigy 4 Pro - which is again an upgrade to the X-Fi Plat, connected to the Z-560s and I've very happy.

The Z-5500s look fantastic, and great specs, huge sub, but :

(1) Lumpy bass and very slow - almost behind the music bass

(2) Suffered from random "pops" picking up electrical noise from around the house etc, this wasn't an isolated incident, if you do a search for "pop" and Z-5550s - you'll come up with quite a few threads ...

with a sub as large as the one with the z-5500, when you did get a "pop" sometimes it made you jump out of your skin !

Just my opinion

Mark.

You did say second hand, that explains it all.

Anyway, these are the best money can buy.
#7
Are these better than the new pioneer HTP-GS1 xbox 360 ones or are they about the same quality or would i be happy with either of them ?
#8
I can't see how this connects to 6 soruces... is the whole setup wireless??? As it'll look like spaghetti junction with all those inputs and speakers wires....

i think the ones you bought must be faulty as ive heard the sound quality and its superb one of the best speakers i have ever seen for a pc and in that price range and they look really good too.

These speakers are incredible value for money and give an excellent sound WHEN and only when combined with a decent sound card.

I am very fussy when it comes to my sounds and in the past never dreamed that I would buy a PC speaker system, let along be happy with.

I have always used a dedicated music amp and separate speakers for my PC but wanted to upgrade to surround sound when I came across the Z5550. I read review after review, all praising these speakers but I was still very sceptical. I found them for £200 which was way below what I had budgeted for a decent av amp and speaker package and you pretty much get what you pay for when it comes to separates.

I took the plunge along with a SB Audigy 2 ZS and to say I was impressed was an understatement! These things are loud, the bass is tight, punchy and the sat's are detailed and precise. My expectations were meet easily and bypassed by some way and so as these were also designed to be used without a PC decided to purchase another set for my living room, but unfortunately this is where the Z5550 were found out.

I connected them to a number of different sources (all digital) but the detail and clarity returned was appalling and nothing like what I had become use to from the ones connected to my pc. The unit must be faulty I thought so got a replacement only to be disappointed once again. This of course was when I realised the importance of my sound card. On my pc the input used was direct which meant it was the soundcard processing all the sound and therefore bypassing the z5550's amplifier!

Like Buckster I too have experienced the pop every now and then but only when there turn on and no sounds are being produced, which doesn't bother me in the slightest as I simply turn them off (as there not in use anyways). When it does happen the level is minimal and certainly has never made me jump. I have never experienced a pop when music, film or game has been in use and I've had these for close to 2 years now.

Conclusion, if like me you are quite fussy and you crave detail and clarity then I probably wouldn't recommend these if you are going to be using with anything other than your PC, however if you are going to use with a PC and have a decent soundcard, BUY THESE, you will not find better quality for the price.

I hope this helps.

I got 2 sets of these 5500s, manage to blag one free. :) ;-)
My first set were v1, this had a dimmer control pod backlight and the speaker cables got RCA plugs.
My second set was v2, this had a brighter control pod backlight and proper speaker wire or cables.

Both sets are good, but mine give off a subwoofer hum, more noticeably on the v1 than v2.
#12
I have the v1, no humming here. Other sources around the sub can cause it to hum, eg unshielded cables etc.
#13
Have a set of these hooked up to a Auzentech X-Merdian Soundcard & previously the Auzentech/HDA X-Plosion Soundcard. Great value for money & great sound. No pops with mine (v2)

I have both, the Pioneers in the living room (carpeted) and the z5500's in a smaller office room with laminate flooring. I absolutely love the z5500's. They really are very powerful for a set of speakers designed for computer use.

For me, I like to use the z5500's to listen to music, and the Pioneer's for movies and gaming.

Buy both! :D

P.s. With 2x 360 game offer (with the Pioneer's) works through play.com. Be quick though, the price and the offer may not last beyond the end of Jan.

I have had a few complaints...
#19
I have to admitt, I've had a complaint, only one mind you but what a complaint that was! Crazy (student) person at the time was living next door, came banging on my door with a bloody hand asking if I could turn it down, which I did. I asked what had she done to her hand and she said she did it punching the wall because of the bass?! :?

Dude, you need to respect your neighbours! Buy 'em some ear guards :-D
#21
awwww poor girl, you should have got her told 'If its too loud, you're too old love!'
#22
Her name's not Mary, is it?
#23
Don't know what here name was, she was waaay to crazy for me to find out!

Thing was, it wasn't even loud! Vol was on four bars and for anyone that’s got these will realize that that is not loud at all!

I was setting up for a funny! Bloody Mary... heavy drinker maybe... anyway.

Yeah, 4 bars is ok if you're in the room, but through a wall the bass really does sound huge.

I have these speakers connected to my PC and whilst the sound is fantastic, I also get random 'pops' and 'bangs' every so often. When someone flicks a lightswitch it usually pops... very annoying

The sub on this is thing is huge in terms of size and sound volume. If you imagine a 12" LP album cubed. Very heavy item too. I only have the bass level set to 1/10 because any louder and the neighbours would go mental

The sound is great though and I'm happy enough with them. Can easily hook these up to your XBOX360 too via the optical in. (There's loads of input options which is another great thing about these speakers)

I have one of these attached to my DVD player and Media Centre. The last system I had was totally over-specified and over complex, certainly as far as the missus was concerned - way too many boxes, wires and remotes. The 5500 I would recommend to anyone, for great sound on a budget and good-looking kit. It's true however that the sub is forking huge. I have it hidden away under a coffee table in the corner where it and the associated spaghetti won't be noticed. Oh, and I haven't noticed any pops or buzzes. Amazon have had these at under £200 for ages - that's where I got mine. Sorry I never thought of posting it here.

Thanks for the feedback all :)

I ended up with some Z906's though after 18 months of using a sound bar, they sound even better & don't get that annoying popping problem.

Still have mine from this deal, still works like a dream!
