Uncle bens is expensive. But so often the cheap stuff just turns to mush.
I'm a bit of a rice obsessive but personally I'd avoid long grain rice - tastes rubbery. I'd go for Basmati if you like the grains to be distinctive or Thai if you like a more starchy component. Wild rice is lovely but costs a lot! I wouldn't buy fast-cook or any other types of rice. Expect to pay substantially less for long grain than the other ethnic rices. Also they tend to be from the US and are almost certainly GM.

Best IMO is tilda basmati or thai fragrent.

I voted this hot when I saw it posted earlier. That is because this is a good price for any rice at the moment., not because its the best rice on the market. Most people would probably agree that the best is a good quality basmati, but thats another subject altogether! This is a good deal. Cooked properly, I reckon it will be fine :roll: Doubt if it will make us mutate either ;-) Rep added Good find:)
I bought a small one of asda long grain and it is really awful, even when cooked properly!

I buy long grain from netto usually and its lovely!
Hear Hear! I reckon most rice comes out ok if you know how to cook it. They are all different. I`ve got good results with this one.:whistling:

no rice other than risotto rice is worth bothering with for making a risotto.

long grain is ok if you want chinese stylesticky rice, but for Indian, I would go for Basmati ot Pilau.

Farm Foods sells Tilda basmati (smallish bags) for about 90p, which is quite nice.

Agreed: Arborio, Carnaroli or Vialone Nano depending on the style of risotto.

This cheap rice is OK and goes a long way but it's easy to overcook, don't take your eyes off it and flush it through with boiling water in a sieve after it comes off out of the pan and it should come out OK. This quid deal is great for recession busting cheap meals.
Own brand rice is about this price in most supermatkets.
Bought this a while ago by mistake and its awful like so many others have said here - turns in to a slimy blob of rice. Price is good but is virtually un-edible so I have voted cold.
ps before anyone says - we gave it a second chance because we had a big bag and did not want to waste it , ie a second cook (and cooked properly )and on both occasions it was a dense slimy blob - ending on positive note though, it would certainly fill you up and line the stomach
Morissons' Value Basmati is £1.29 a kilo (up from £1.00 around last November) and is a great choice. I love my rice, obviously Tilda is lovely but it's way too expensive. Morissons' Value is a great alternative and I can't actually fault it - not for taste, nor texture.

Where do you usually shop?

According to independant price checker, mysupermarket.co.uk (thanks asda! :thumbsup:), both tesco & sainsburys sell long grain rice for 73p per kg

Edit: so do asda, but for some reason it only comes up when I set asda as the preferred supermarket :?
ASDA's smart price easy cook long grain rice is 73p/kilo.
So this £1 per kilo rice from ASDA isn't a particularly good deal.
I always use the smart price rice and it tastes delicious, just as nice as any other long grain rice!
It needs to be rinsed 3 times in water first.
The only way rice ends up a sticky, starchy mush is if it's not cooked correctly.

Perfect long grain rice
230g washed rice.
600ml boling water.
Rice in saucepan, pour in boling water.
15 minutes simmer at lowest heat possible with lid on.
Turn the heat off and leave for 15 minutes.
Fluff with fork.

The best way to wash rice is it put it in a sieve, put the sieve in a bowl of water, and stir the rice around with a spoon to release as much of the starch as possible, remove the sieve, empty the bowl and repeat twice more. You get far more starch out then just rinsing under a tap.
I find whisking the rice in a saucepan is a good way to wash it (then empty water through a sieve).
