Is it worth buying this with the release of the extended versions so close though? I guess there are some heathens out there who prefer the cinematic cut, but for anyone who's read the books, these are a bit lacking.. Not voting either way mind, because I bought this set myself nearly a year ago as a stop-gap until the extended versions came out.. Just wonder if it might be a false economy to pick these up when any real fan will want to grab the extended versions anyway..

I understand that, but every time this comes on here, the same old crap comes on, when its clearly an excellent price, but some hobbits think its unworthy due to the extended editions... nonsense

same goes with weights etc, the weights are never heavy enough for some, its boring, if peolpe could only see that some of the things posted on here are not for personal preference.

:) I LOL'd

Khamill, this set has been this price before, in fact, it was this price last week with another retailer, and it's been lower too..

The point is, this was only ever really a stop-gap release until the extended versions came out, and excuse for the distributor to make us double-dip.. Anyone really into these films will want the extended versions, and with their release so close, for a lot of people this will be an unwise purchase..

Getting tempted at these prices, but I really dont want to double dip once EE is out. These are BOUND to go under a tenner when EE is out. Will have to wait about another year for EE to be a reasonable £15.

Come on guys.... So £4 odd per Bluray isnt a great price for a LOTR movie????

This isnt all about the fanatics, its about a great price for 3 great films, for the people who may not be as fanatical as myself or some others, i bought at £15 as a stop gap, and was and still am delighted with the price, i will purchase the extended when a decent price too.

Still doesnt take away from the fact that this is a great price for people in general.

I wouldn't pay 50p for the non-extended.

But you'd be happy to get up to change the disc on the new releases. It's a joke, laserdisc died years ago why are we flipping media in 2k11, id stick with these. Hot!

Youd rather not see the movie as the director (and more importantly author) intended it than swap a disc? /rolleyes

Kudos on knowing how Tolkien intended his story to play on the silver screen.
Can I borrow your time machine when you're finished with it? I want to see which Dracula film Bram Stoker likes best.

This is a good price; but I don't think it's outstanding.

Personally I'm just as happy watching the Theatrical versions; the EE are great but uncomfortably long.

As for the EE versions being as Tolkien intended where can I buy his re-released Fellowship book minus that annoying Tom Bombadil character?

nowt wrong with laserdisc.

No there's not I still have my player :D These movies were too long on theatrical release as it is though, I dont think I could bare sit through any of them again, probably the only case I can think of where id avoid the directors cut. Good deal though imo.

Good call Captain Sarcasm, what was (obviously) intended by the comment was that entire chunks of the story (as written by Tolkien) are missing from both cuts but less from the EE therefore giving a "truer" adaptation of his story

EDIT: Yes before you get on your soapbox for a second time Im well aware entire parts of the story are vastly different but few would argue the screenplay for the trilogy was fairly well handled

Voting hot because it is a great price. I did hear that the video quality of this particular set was a little bit lacking. Is this true?
#29
Extended versions? Jeezo, these are already too long as it is. The girlfriend started watching one on C4 when it was already halfway through the other night and it still took about a day to get to the end...

Mind numbingly dull for me. Bargain for those who like.

Peter Jackson says that the theatrical cut is his preferred versions of the films that is why they were released at the cinema.
#36
It all depends as to whether you've seen the EE version...if you have then going back to this theatrical cut would be lunacy at any price! If however you've only seen these in the truncated form and like 'em that way, then get them and be happy...you deserve each other.

...if you really don't like these films in any shape or form 'cos they're too long for your lickle attention span, then shut the **** up and go bother another thread!
#37
The 4 disc Extended DVD set I already own is as good as this BR transfer ... And although o would l love the ext versions on BR I won't be buying. Having go swap discs halfway through is retarded and all the extra content is DvD anyway.

I ain't paying again.

I have both dvd and blu.. and the bluray quality is much more sharper and better quality than dvd. u must be watching this bluray on SD tv if not see any difference..
#39
The Blu-ray is clearly an upgrade on the DVD. The trilogy ranges in quality. The first one could look better and more consistent throughout, the other two look pretty good. I still feel they could have looked better, given the standing the movies have. But they'll do as they are.
