...I hadn't realised that 'coloured' was now also on the dodgy word list...

Hilarious series, hope it hasn't been edited by the barmy brigade - hot

A black couple moved in next door to a white couple.

    Hilarity prevailed.

This programme is truly awful, it wasn't even that funny when it was first shown. Nothing to do with it being racist, it's just ITV sh*te.

I used to love television in the seventies but I have learned that it is usually best to leave these things as fond memories - once I get past the opening credits to such programmes as The Persuaders and The Champions I can barely watch. Talk about camp! Roger Moore in cravat and flares with five inch wait band and wobbly Tibetan rock formations in The Champions. I have all the theme music on my iPod but I'll resist the temptation to relive my teenage years vicariously.

Especially fond (hot) memories of Nina Baden Semper, though. And Alexadra Bastedo.

But it was great at the time, don't you think we'll look back in 20 years and think how could people have gone around with trousers with the crutch round their knees and those god awful hoodies, etc, etc...

Everybody knows its Scrat's opinion. Scrat posted it. What other blatantly obvious statements have people got to put to make you happy?

    "I posted this."?

I suspect the series is awful. The only bit I can remember from it is the one where a group of black blokes kidnap Eddie and put him in a cauldron, then dance half naked round him as they pretend to prepare to cook him.

Its unbelievable in this day and age, grotesquely offensive and **** hilarious.

Did you see the excellent interviews with the cast members on the BBC 70’s program a week or so back? They all seemed to agree that it was a program of its time and is embarrassing to be reminded of now, and shouldn't be aired again. The actors (Eddie I think especially) stopped the show when the writers run out of ideas and it degenerated into puerile name calling as the only way to get laughs. It was a conscious point that they white guy was always made look worse off at the end and that the similarities between families were highlighted more than any stereotyped differences.
May still be on iplayer if you're interested...

I'm a big fan of British comedy but like many other 70s sitcoms such as On the Buses and Bless This House, watching the original episodes can be hard work.

The film versions are all good snapshots of the episodes and I tend to leave things there. Love Thy neighbour is no exception for me.

IMHO, being an impressionable teen at the time, I think it did more good than harm as it brought a lot of the issues and stupidity of racism to the fore and showed just how ridiculous it all was, especially given all the other stife that was around then. The 70's was a watershed in many ways, and this kinda was so bad it helped turn the corner. A program of its time definitely...

Ps I stopped watching it well before the end, was so cringeworthy and embarrassing even back then

Don't be silly! When someone posts "this is truly awful" it is a statement of fact rather than "I felt this was awful" in any case I suspect some of the posters who condemn this have not actually watched it.

The programme fullfilled expectations in the 70's but it should really stay in the 70's, not so much the PC angle just simply poor quality broadcasting.

Loved watching this in the 70's although it was a bit daft. Much preferred Alf Garnet.
