why are these so expensive

Please add the price to the title.

They are expensive because Steve Jobs wants to be richer than Bill Gates! A similarly specced Dell will cost you about £700. This difference in price is pure margin for Apple. Someone one told me, never underestimate the number of idiots there are in the world and he was right. These are the people that but this stuff!

Simply because it's apple.

You pay a premium for apple products, it's usually up to 50% more, although apple don't actually make the products which is very similar to the rest of the retailers such as sony / hp etc.. They are all made in places like Taiwan and quite often the same factories.

So why do you pay more?
No idea, must be because those hipsters want to be cool - jokes aside. Although apples OS is pretty cool. I guess that is where the cost is, also the warranty. I've only heard good things about apple support.

Apple iMac prices are pretty much inline with all-in-ones from HP, Dell etc these days....

actually the Apple OS is pretty virus free and runs so much better than a same spec'ed PC
overall the build quality is so much better

the down side is its harder to replace broken parts and the parts are alot more expensive .....ex mac engineer haha

Yeah, if you find the RRP that PC world quote to make their offer look better it might approach something like this price. If you took the price that a human has paid in real money... not a chance.

I can find laptops with i7, 2gb proper graphics cards for less than £1k

Your paying to use the best OS out there, the best design out there (i.e. small, thin, no noise whatsoever, etc), and of course, you pay the premium for the apple name and quality.

You also need to take into account that Mac's have huge lifespans in comparisons to PCs, as they dont degrade to a slow mess after 6 months like windows based PCs do. They also have a very high resale value, meaning upgrading to newer models is very cheap.

At the expense of having to sit next to a socket as the battery only lasts an hour? Ok, you do that.

The graphics on any Macbook are sufficient for its purpose, on-the go work, video editing, etc. If you want anything more than that, then your either a) A gamer, in which case why post here in the first place?, or b) are a design professional, in which case NO laptop will cut it for your needs.

In either case, it is evident that you do not know enough about Mac systems to provide any relevant facts about them. Instead you just choose to go with the rest of the crowd and take the easy road... Just like the majority of idiots on this site.

That's really not true. While Apple's stuff has a higher resale value, custom built pc's can be upgraded and when something in warranty breaks, you get that part back free. When it's not in warranty, you buy a new one.

The same thing goes for Apple, but when something breaks in an Apple out of warranty, you have to buy a whole new PC.

I've got both and i love both, but they are completely different. My PC is about 3x faster than my imac 27inch (new i7 ones). I use pc for gaming and imac for my work (photography / web development)

To those that are using the excuse that you're paying for the OS, you can buy and install the Mac OS on non-Apple laptops with the same functionality - though do bear in mind it's not compatible with anywhere near the same number of games and programs that Windows machines are.

This price is ridiculous for the spec, it really is, but as someone said above - you can never really underestimate the level of idiocy some people will display for a certain make or brand.

Why is it always a case of the same kind of people making comments on products they have no interest in?

£1609 for a refurb'd one from Apple which is practically the same apart from the packaging.

Probably best not to make this sort of generalisation with that avatar. Just saying.

Why do the ignorant haters feel the need to comment on every single Apple thread? If it's not of any interest to you, move on. Nobody is interested in your views for the umpteenth time.
