Been looking for a decent price on one of these for a while and this is a pretty good deal IMO.

Apply code EASTER5 to get the price down to £725.04 then 3.2% quidco brings it down to £701.84 over £100 cheaper than apple direct.

I think the code is only valid until 7th so be quick if you want one

Or want OSX, without building a hackintosh.

I'm waiting for the Macbook Pro update, although likely to be June now.

Hmm, if only the hardware was up to the quality of the OS. Unfortunately not, any purchaser should ensure that they buy Apple care warranty.

From experience, and the experience of many others (proportionally high compared to other so called premium hardware).

Why not buy a Dell Mini 10v and hackintosh it. Total Cost (Including LEGAL OSX disc) is roughly £270. details here-http://gizmodo.com/5389166/how-to-hackintosh-a-dell-mini-10v-into-the-ultimate-snow-leopard-netbook
Sure it might not run Photoshop or something demanding, but for £450, I would buy a separate powerful desktop that would be miles faster than this.

And bear in mind that Apple are going to release their new line up soon, so this would quickly become outdated.

no point comparing a mac to a PC ; they are built for different markets.

Outdated? I'm just taking a guess, but I believe that MacBooks will continue to operate even after Apple have released new models.

If you are going to hackintosh, don't follow this old guide, it will cause you pain!

I disagree, money being no object, the Mac is a better machine for what most people use a PC for.

But unfortunately money is an object, and most people cant justify spending on a Mac. Shame, because they are much nicer to use day in day out.

If you say so...
I had to buy a mac (and an Iphone) in order to gain experience developing for said Iphone and I hate using the mac. I suppose it's alright for the little ones getting into using computers as it's much simpler and child-friendly than windows.

I am ashamed to own these devices but it is a very gullible market which I am very much looking forward to exploiting.

Installing OS X on any non apple hardware is not allowed (you break EULA)
Since you are doing something illegal why bother with the LEGAL OS X disc ?

Last time I checked, breaking a EULA isn't technically ILLEGAL.

Vote for cold. New macbook with i5 cpu will arrive very soon. 700 pounds is not bargain at all. It is robbing.

So you obviously haven't exploited any of it's power yet. Try learning shell scripting and realise that you don't need the "child friendly" bits. Unlike Windoze. Try running any Windoze app without a GUI and see how far you get.
And OSX includes "automator" which lets you do funky clever stuff at GUI level as well if that's your thing.
Thanks for advertising that OSX is so simple it can be used by a child and so powerful it's good for a hardcore hacker with about 20 years IT industry experience.
Unlike Windoze which is suitable neither for children or hardcore users. Maybe it's OK for people who just want Word, internet explorer and outlook.

Oh for the love of god, just leave it guys. OSX....Windows 7......blah blah blah. They're just OS's, each with many happy users.

And PC/Laptop gaming. I'd get a mac if I was silly rich but not if I could just about afford it.

Good deal! But with Student Discount Link http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000702/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTAyNTQzMzg it's only £701.48 Delivered! :-D Also 3-year warranty with all education purchases.

But there have been rumours of a Macbook pro refresh since January when the new Intel chips were formally announced. We are now in April and still nothing; it's always this week, ok not this week perhaps next week..........

If you want a Macbook then this is a decent enough price based on discounts being rare unless you are buying through the educational scheme. If the new i5 models are part of the Macbook pro range then they will be significantly more expensive than this anyway.

with a mac, you'll pay about twice what it's worth for (these days) poorer quality hardware with a much higher failure rate. just check out the recent news regarding the iphone, the ipod touch, and the monitors on their latest desktops. apple used to be reliable, with better performance, but these days that sadly isn't true any more.

you want shell scripting? use linux. that's what the mac does. except, unlike linux, they charge you for it, and make you pay for the upgrades, and (even worse) close the source off so it's harder to develop for it. apple also limit what you can and can't do with the hardware you've paid for and with the software, too. did i mention that the hardware is massively underpowered for the price?

me? i'll stick to buying much cheaper, better-specced, better quality hardware, and i'll run a completely free linux distribution like ubuntu on it. hell, i've got my mother and my wife both running linux, and they're both completelt non-technical - and neither of them will use anything else any more. my wife has even taken to winding up her mac-loving older brother by calling his macbook pro a fisher-price adult play centre. hell, my first-gen aspire one netbook is running a full ubuntu installation, and it's smaller, lighter, vastly cheaper, and much less embarassing than a macbook.

So how many of us are using them for graphics work? and if you were serious about graphics work you work buy a desktop mac not a laptop !!

I love it when people by Macs and put Windows 7 on them straight away so funny.

I am a long term PC owner all the way up to Windows 7, who recently got a Macbook, and it really makes me happy in little ways. The multitouch trackpad is gorgeous to use and so intuitive. Also people have criticised the build, but to my experience the Aluminium Macbooks feel better than any others I have used.

Yes these are expensive, but they are a treat. And this is a good price for a MacBook as at today if you can't get the student discount. Talk of the upgrade is a bit silly as it is only rumoured, and could still be a while off yet.

I agree, in my eyes though this is cold. I'd wait for the new models that are coming soon.

didn't vote hot or cold... it's cold though.

Crap price. You don't even get an IPS screen FFS, so 'image quality' if you're into photoshop et all, will be no better than any laptop with a standard Hitachi LCD. Mugs!
#32
yeah, IPS screens don't come on entry level macs I don't think.

I agree. The trackpad alone is worth a lot of money. Recently I think other makes are trying to copy and maybe they will succeed but when I bought my macbook this was not an option. Some things about Mac are stupid, they do seem to treat you as less able but I think more things about windows are bad. The annoying thing is the negatives of apple would be SO easy for them to fix or that they are skimping whereas the negatives of windows feel like they just aren't good enough to make it run smoothly. I thought for years before buying them and there are some situations (and locations for sure, e,g, my first year halls) where a macbook is tons better, (I had no laptop so borrowed most ppls a coupla of times, thus used about 10 laptops at least and built up a fair idea, for those student halls specifically macbooks were MUCH better due to certain limitations of the building) but often there is little difference. Windows does have a relaxing nostalgia to it =] though using my two windows' that broke this weekend was arghhh!! Haven't used mac for long enough to know what a broken one is like, mamaged to fix all problems so far =] Is quite nice learning how to use the intricacies of a new OS I am not smart enough to learn a new language or programming fluentely, but can learn a new OS!

I wouldn't have paid for a macbook had it not been for the huge student discounts, rebate deals and 3 yr warranty though.

Oops, this post was longer than intended.. but basically. No OS is perfect, which computer you buy should depend on your circumstances =] In my first year macbook would have made life so much easier, now I have one in a normal house its a luxury and the hardware is my fave part (not the OS) but windows 7 on a good laptop would be nearly as good.

I am a matchstick? hnhuh

None of the Macbook pros use IPS screens - ony dell XPS 16 I think use them - very expensive.

Apple Macs = commodity hardware + industrial design + osx

Dell / HP etc.. = commodity hardware + pragmatic design + windows 7

Windows 7 > Snow Leopard.

Vista was a pile of poo but Win 7 is just fantastic.

DO NOT buy the white macbook. It's plastic gets dented very easily.
Go into a shop and have a look at the usb ports! you can dent it with a fingernail if it is not already scuffed up. the white also gets discolored easily. it ages very badly unless you clean it every day.

if u can afford this, you can prob afford the base macbook pro. you will NOT regret it. i have it and it is solid, sturdy, fast and beautiful.

having said that, wait til end of april, as core i3/5/7 macbook pros are long overdue:

No Robert. I5 models will be the same price as the moment. That is why Apple is keen to get rid of the old style storage and sell them with discount. Therefore, 700 pounds is robbing money and the hardware in this macbook is already outdated. Even you can still run the newest OS. But it will become slower and slower. So why just wait 1-2 months and buy the new model even with 100 more. But the hardware will last longer.
