yip, look at the webcam (bottom of page) http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/

Thanks for this.

Worth noting though that there looks to be 4 hotels within this Macdonald resort, and all these rooms are at the Aviemore Inn, which looks to be not quite as high a standard as the others.

I've been to Aviemore. Not stayed at this hotel but highly recommend the area to visit.
It's really close to the Cairngorm Mountains, there's a herd of reindeer which live close by, you can visit these, feed them, stroke them etc. Closer than you'll probably ever get to a reindeer, unless you sit on your roof on Christmas eve. These walks are guided, so you won't get lost in the mountains. Not ideal for wheelchairs/buggies though.

Fantastic chip shop in Aviemore village, Smithies, highly recommend that and the bakery which is about 3 doors down. Macaroni Cheese Pie is the way forward...!

If you take advantage of this deal, you won't be disappointed! It's not too far from Inverness too (but bear in mind it is pretty much the middle of nowhere, so obviously some driving will be required) so if you fancy a bit of shopping too, there's great shops nearby.

Great part of the world up there - just checked and there seems to be decent availability - dunno why this isn't hot.

Any idea how to get there without a car from south of england (wiltshire).
Driving in the car will be about 8 hours a way.

And as cheap as possible please:whistling:

Quite a cheap deal, i found availability for the last few days of Feb.
A train from London will still take 8 hours!!
#15
Thanks - just booked for Valentine's night - £19.99! Great deal.

Thank you OP

we were in Aviemore twice last year and loved it.A really beautiful part of Scotland.

Managed to arrange a dirty weekend for next week. It's just a pity that we could'nt get any child places for any weekends during the promotion.

The easiest way is to see if your nearby airport has any flights to Inverness (Flybe, Ryanair and Easyjet all fly in/out of Inverness to various airports around the UK), Aviemore is about 30 miles away from Inverness and you can easily get a train which takes about 30 mins!

Aviemore/Inverness are beautiful parts of the World (fair enough I live in Inverness so I am a little biased) but theres some beautiful scenery and plenty to do/see!

If anyone wants any further info then let me know and I will try my best to help you out!

Cheap internal flight into either EDI or GLA then a bus up or hire car? More expensive than driving I'd imagine though!
#19
Thanks for this. Have just booked. I would have booked Valentines night but I have already invited friends up so went for week before instead

This is an idea but be aware that Aviemore is still around 160 miles north of either Glasgow or Edinburgh!
#21
Ive just had a quick look on the Easyjet site and if you can travel from London in Feb then you could fly return to Inverness for about 35 quid!

Big Mac and Fries with that!? ;-)

Cheesy-jet used to fly to Inverness...not sure if they still do, but maybe worth a look if you're considering it.

TBH.. once you add £15 transport from Inverness to Aviemore, and also getting to Gatwick/Luton, you might as well get a train costing around £80. It might be slightly longer, but there is no hassle of airport security and boarding planes and what not.
#25
cheapest in the world... thanks fo posting this.....

Booked for one night on 14th feb...
#26
Total Bargain...top find. Just booked 2 rooms over Valentines weekend for £80.

Its normally £80 a room per night!!!

Good find. This is the first time a deal has worked for me! Normally i'm buying for the sake of a deal. £20 in the school holidays, great. I'll be the one wearing the ski jacket!
#28
Booked us up for 14th Feb too, cheers OP!

It is just the room but the extras are still pretty reasonable: Eg It's £5 per person for the use of the facilities per day, and £7.50 for breakfast each too if you want it.

Just hope there's no snow blizzards when driving up & down from where we are in West Lothian!!!
#29
Also booked over valentines weekend...hope all you guys brush up alright, or I reckon it's going to look more like a star trek convention than a resort.

Helpful note for those that have a booking for the valentines day weekend: treatments at the adjoining spa are competitively priced, but they are running out of slots on Valentines day. Get in soon as you can.

Details here:

http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/aviemore/leisure/index.htm#vital

Phone number (for the Spa, NOT the hotel) 01479 815270

They're open till 8pm tonight and from 7am tomorrow.

great deal...booked the week before Valentines 'HUKD' weekend
#31
hmmmf, no rooms left at £20 on the 14th. bummer.
#32

Just a wee note for those who haven't been to Aviemore before - wear lots of layers, and definitely take gloves, scarves, and hat. It is truly bone-chillingly cold there, I've never felt cold like it in the UK, even when there is no wind.

To those who are going for a family trip, the Highland Wildlife Centre is really nice. It's one where you drive round in the car, but there is also part where you get out and walk. They have proper black highland cows, so wild looking! Its seven miles south of Aviemore.

I loved the Highland Folk Museum, as did the kids. We went at the beginning of January one year and it was open for business, very impressed. They have a reproduction of a traditional Scottish "black house". You are taken in and sat down at the peat fire and told all about life in the past, in those houses. You will reek of peat smoke after, so don't wear your designer gear

I second the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, its a great place with very friendly staff, and interesting information. I was amazed at how small reindeer are, I thought they would be donkey sized

booked for the end of Feb 3 nights.
Off to buy some thermals now! Very sexy!

Know nothing about the area, going by train, so any good sites to look up? And any help would be great! thanks

Here is the Aviemore tourist site. Most of the sites give details on how to get from Aviemore to the different attractions by public transport, eg. there is a bus from Aviemore Train Station (which is right in the t own) right to the Reindeer Centre.

I went a couple of years ago at the end of feb and it was pretty miserable. It was 3 degrees during the day and it was quiet because there was no snow, so only the posh restaurant and the one that charged £20 for a 3 courser were open, so i had to take my young kids down to the town for dinner each night. If you go to the mountains, I think it's about £8 or £10 to get the fenicular up to the top of the mountain but there's nothing to do once you're up there except buy a coffee and a cake and come back down...
The onsite pool was good because it was so quiet and the kids fun house in the Hilton Coylumbridge was okay because my oldest wasnt quite 3 then but over all.... would i go back at that time of year? Probably not...

It wasnt snowy when we went either, though bitterly cold. and we went on 4 january. There were plenty of things to do as Ive already said. The Highland Wildlife Park is excellent as was the folk museum. The cairngorm reindeer centre is great fun too, taking visitors out onto the hills to find the reindeer to feed them, apart from having some down at the centre for people who couldnt go out on the hills. There was plenty of places to eat in town as well as the supermarket where you could have bought snacks, drinks and things for your young kids.

I guess a place is what you make of it

Cheers for this, just got a couple of rooms for the end of feb, i just hope there is snow.
