MAG: Massive Action Game Collectors Edition (SteelBook)

The year is 2025. The optimism and harmony of the 2010s were completely eradicated by 2020. A global crisis loomed. Food shortages sparked riots, currencies plummeted, fuel reserves dwindled, and oil-producing nations began to ration what remained. It is a dark future. Governments earmarked money for humanitarian efforts, overseas security, and intelligence services which, over time, found its way the coffers of a small group of Private Military Companies. These three private armies (Valor, Raven, and S.V.E.R.) then began to recruit aggressively. Soldiers without a country, the contractors fight wars that never happened. This is the nature of the Shadow War.

From the award-winning developer, Zipper Interactive, comes the next evolution in gaming -- MAG. A first-person, online-only shooter, MAG lets you experience battles with up to 256 real people across a global battlefield. Players join one of three PMCs fighting each other in a shadow war and can either become skilled operatives or rank up to eventually command their private army to victory. Featuring unprecedented online action of a scale never before devised with player controlled strategic assets such as calling in air strikes, mortar barrages and parachute insertions; the persistent Shadow War in MAG keeps players coming back for more.

Unprecedented Action ?or the first time ever, fight 256 real player battles in hi-def online combat for contracts around the world.

i want this :)
banned#2
good price but poor reviews...

shame I wanted to get it
#3
The beta version was absolutely terrible in my opinion
#4
It got mostly good reviews...
#5
I played Beta and didn't rate it too much tbh yet few people i know have gone and got full game and claim its better,
So i went and ordered it at Play for £37 early last week still not arrived yet i had the usual slow dispatch process from Play going from processing to packing then back to processing etc: lol
there service is far from what it used to be
#6
I'm enjoying it... No lag so far and is a good online experience. I got a bit lucky and got it for £20 at a local used games store (someone bought it the day before and didn't realise it was online only so took it back) . It kind of takes me back to playing Joint Ops on the pc and the 128 player maps
#7
if u can wait this will be in the bargain bin in no time
#8
I've been enjoying this, but I am a bit fed up with the lack of maps now if I am honest. Hope they bring out some more maps soon, with an update/patch or some DLC.......if so, it may hold my interest for a while longer........at least until BC2 comes out :-D

.......the reviews have mostly been good by the way - Metacritic average of 75, user score of 8.3
#9
I bought this and got a refund the following day. The game was good, more mature than MW2. However every other game I got disconnected from server error 5:5. The patch you download is suppose to reduce this. If and when they sort this I will buy it again!
#10
great price :)
#11
Wonder if amazon will price match this. had my credit card done by shopto in the past so would never use them again. Heat added though

I played the first 2 versions of the beta (didn't bother with the 3rd) and enjoyed them. If you ever played Battlefield 2 on the PC then it's sort of similar to it. The people that hate it are the run n' gunners who compare all fps shooters online to COD:MW where in reality they are VERY different games
#12
I was looking forward to this but the beta was crap. Bad company 2 on the other hand is gr8 any1 kno any good deals for that on ps3?
#13
I thought the beta was rubbish BUT i bought the full game and absolutely love it, its a great change from the usual FPS type game! :-)

Best price for BC2 at the moment is also at Shopto - £34.85 (+ £1.40 Quidco)

Luckily I managed to get a very early pre-order in at GAME, for £24.99, which also gave me beta access. I'm sure there will be some more decent offers coming up in the next few weeks though, or on release day.

I'm a little worried about BC2 coming out to be honest, as it is so flippin' good that I am not going to have time to play anything else! ;-)
#15
i have got it before
#16
I'm suprised at how long it took for them to drop the price of this pile of garbage. Considering how fast Dark Void dropped.

FYI: MAG designed to be a 'platform,' balancing patches coming soon (Joystiq.com)

We recently got a chance to speak with Zipper Interactive's Alan Van Slyke, who produced the company's recently released multi-multi-multiplayer FPS, MAG. When asked about ongoing support for the title, Van Slyke responded that the developer won't let the game go stale -- in fact, he explained that Zipper sees MAG as a platform on which new content can be added in the future.

Van Slyke explained, "we made a big investment, we had a lot of learning, we built a lot of tech, and we have this awesome multiplayer platform that we can build upon and add new gametypes to." He later added, "the possibilities are endless for us, and in many ways, even though we just released the game, looking forward for us is super exciting, knowing what we can do with the engine we have today."

The producer also addressed concerns many players have had with balancing issues -- particularly that the ragtag S.V.E.R. faction is far too overpowered. "It's something we're definitely aware of, and we've already got a number of fixes in the pipe. We're definitely committed to making sure all the maps, factions and gear is perfectly balanced." For more information on MAG's past, present and future, check out our full interview with Van Slyke when it goes live tomorrow afternoon.

CEX will give £29 cash for this so even if you don't like it you'll only be losing 85p.

You could see it as a 85p rent.

Gud price for this game
didnt enjoy it myself waited all year for it and was really dissapointed with it
#20
Best FPS of the gen, absolutely brilliant, so addictive got my raven character upto level 60 before :)

Bargain.

They improved the graphics a lot from the beta, higher res textures, shaders, light maps, normal mappings and such. Looks quite good for the size of the massive domination maps and huge geometry it processs, but I guess this will be lost on most MW2 tards.

Got mixed reviews, some idiots gave it lower reviews for stupid reasons like you cant instantly respawn, or it was easy to die ? This game is not for young people under 25 who have been silver spooned easy games recently.

Some of the battles i've been in have been pretty epic and i've not replicated this feeling in other games.

This game will be below £25 soon...Battlefield Bad Company 2 will be a far superior game in all aspects.
#23
I love this game! Once you get to level 10 and unlock the last two missions and the full 256 people battles its brilliant! I rented this so am looking forward to this with the instructions so I know what the hell is going on. Thanks.

Thanks for that link fanpages - interesting to read from Zipper regarding the future of the game.

Looking at VGChartz, it seems that sales figures for MAG have been very good - just under half a million in the first two weeks of release. They definately need to push some more content out soon, to keep the community happy, but if they do that succesfully I can see a bright future for MAG.

Talk on some forums has been suggesting that Zipper now ditch SOCOM, and focus solely on supporting MAG, which is interesting to note. Comparing the lifetimes sales of the last SOCOM installment (0.99million) and the business that MAG has done in the last two weeks, they may have a point.........

Back in stock now. I checked back 30 minutes after it was out of stock. Just ordered cheers.

I wanted this game to be good but the beta was terrible IMO.

I just get so frustrated with the hype from Sony for their first party titles. According to them every game they make is AAA and best in its category.

The reality never matches the hype though.

Quite simply they cant do FPS they dont understand the market their net code is not good enough for 30 players let alone 200+ Killzone 2 was a good single player game but online was poor. Restistance was desperately average single player and online.

More derivative rubbish I am afraid. Sony developers need to sit down with a copy of the Battlefield games, modern warfare and learn from scratch what the FPS market actually want on consoles and what makes a good game.

I've never played the single player "campaign" / "story" mode of "Killzone 2", but from the end of February until September last year I played online for a total number of hours equivalent to 11 days. I've played a little since but only very infrequently.

I only stopped to give myself opportunity to play all the other games I wanted to try.

If you consider the single player game to be much better then I'm in for a treat.

Thanks.

[But yes, I agree with you in respect of "SOCOM: (US Navy SEALs) Confrontation". I was disappointed with the single player mode of "Resistance 2", and "M.A.G" I wasn't taken with at all. However, I know these titles are a lot better than I have developed so far. Maybe your efforts are better, but I am not going to criticise one/more development team(s) if I'm not aware of the constraints there were under to produce their finished products].

To be fair, "SOCOM:... Confrontation" did not have the advertising campaign behind it, and was hampered by delays that meant many people lost interest along the way.

The first few Beta releases of the title had you waiting for up to 30 minutes to join a game & when you did it may have all been over after a few minutes more.

In the last Beta of "Massive Action Game" that I tried I still saw parallels with the previous experience I had with "SOCOM:... Confrontation" & after I never received a response to my enquiry on the Official EU PlayStation Blog regarding the problem during the installation of a subsequent "M.A.G" Beta release I gave up caring.

I have read many times that the game is much improved now, but still there is the underlying impression of too many participants in one game so that as an individual you never quite feel part of the action & do not appreciate your part in the overall mission.

(As you can see from me following the comments in this thread I'm still eager to gain an appreciation of the game & what it may have to offer).

If I found the Collector's Edition at another retailer for a similar price than I would be tempted to try (again), but my past history with ShopTo (a pre-owned item sold as 'new', and fraudulent credit card activity) has meant I have not repeated my business with them.

Yes, I know I can use PayPal (as this item is no longer a pre-order) but it is pointless having principles if you are only going to fold when you have something to gain.

DO NOT BASE YOUR OPINION SOLEY ON THE BETA!!!!

The final game is alot better. Although I had a similar experience to a lot of people on here initially. When you first start it can be frustrating as there isn't really a proper explanation on how best to complete the game modes. For example on domination (the 256 player mode) there is no tutorial on exactly what the various objectives mean in regards to how best to beat the other team. i.e. the need to potentially take out various bunkers, AA guns, radar points before capturing the first initial objective which is the burn off tower etc. After a few hours playing it becomes obvious so some peoples frustrations may arise from not giving the game enough time.

The graphics are ok. Not great, but then what other fps has anywhere near this amount going on on such large maps. Peronally I think they are pretty good considering everything else the game engine is doing. The sound isn't bad either but the gameplay is where the game shines. No other game I have played (apart from the PC game Planetside from a few years back now) has captured the feeling of being in a war. Overlooking the battlefied for the first time from a good vantage point is quite epic as you see hundreds of people scrambling over the map or on the domination maps when you go to capture the final objectives seeing tens of people attacking and defending a single point. If a game can be exhilirating (which I believe it can) then this game nails it. Running from objective to objective and seeing paratroopers dropping in, AA batteries firing, bunker turrets firing and squads legging it to/from your position is great fun.

Finally, this is not COD:MW2!!!! Team work plays a big role in this game and as in every team based objective game this is what lets it down. There are far too many muppets who have no idea what they are doing regarding following the squad leader instructions (although often the squad leaders themselves have no idea what they are doing) and simple things like not equiping medikits to revive downed team-mates which in turn gives you a healthy xp bonus (double what you get for a kill) is frustrating. Hopefully in time this will solve itself.

My main gripe with this game is that now I pretty much know all the ins and outs of the map (I'm a lvl 57 Valour LMG'er) I find the game too easy. I can quite happily run through the maps mowing down 7-8 or more people a time without dying. This is without camping. Once you have mastered the art of the headshot whilst moving there isn't really a challenge as most people don't seem to be too good at this yet.

This game is still worthy of a purchase and with the supposed support that Zipper will be giving the game it will hopefully continue to evolve until the sequel is released. If you don't like this game but like MW2 then the chances are that you only don't like it because your MW2 skills haven't transferred to MAG and you are likely to be one of the 3000+ people I mowed down on my way to capping your objective :)

Admittely I haven't order a great deal from them but my copy of MAG turned up a day early and I've never had a problem with the other couple of games I've bought from them.

They have had problems with Credit Card fraud in the past..............google it and you will see a lot of discussion of this on various forums. I myself fell foul to credit card fraud, on two cards, which seemed to be related to Shopto activity.

To their credit, they seem to have addressed this issue now - they are using Sagepay for CC payments now, which is a system supported by my CC issuer, and you also have the option of using Paypal (although not for pre-orders).

In terms of product and delivery times, I cannot fault them - possibly the best retailer for getting a game to your door in good time. I can't comment on their customer service, as I have never had the need to return a game. They can't be much worse than GAME though, who I contacted about a return a week ago, and have still not heard back from................

I have all 3 cosole systems now ... but you keep on appearing on ps3 threads spreading crap and lies for some reason ? Killzone 2 was fine for me and 100000s of others.

Online MAG is great, i've had no problem with 256 player battles, lag or net code none at all. And all this running on dedicated servers.

Why should Sony copy other games ? MAG is perfectly fine and innovative in so many ways once you play Domination, this game is like crack and so addictive. Yes I have Bad Company 2 on order for my Xbox 360, because its a different game all together.

I've seen people moan its too easy to be killed, not for me, once you have upgraded your weapons a bit, and move with caution and become proficient. Yes you can die, there is no regenerating health! I notice quite a few people have a lack of situational awareness, as in they do not understand what is transpiring around them in the battle, but this is probably true of the MW2 crowd with no set objectives or focus.

I'm a complete Warhawk junkie. That's my fix. I think perhaps there's too much going on in this game that I'll kind of lose interest.
Is it fun?

It is great fun, however I kept on getting booted out with an error 5:5 server issue so I took it back, as soon as that's sorted I'll be buying once again!
