If you want to look after your rechargeable batteries and give them a bit of a longer life then this is the charger for you. Picks out 'dead' batteries and in some cases can even bring them back to life. A few different charge cycles available. Can be reserved for in store collection, however if you want it transferred to a store of your choice they charge you an extra £10. Not in stock everywhere but seems to be available in quite a few Maplin stores.

Lidl do a similar smart charger for less than half this price and has certainly recovered several of my "dead" batteries, If memory serves right it was £12.99 and they have them on several times a year ( and the Lidl one charges AA,AAA,C,D, and PP3 )

Agreed, great charger probably the best - had one (was called Wizard back then?) - but except for recovering batteries it gets a bit tedious setting discharge/charge currents for normal use - when, say, you just want to charge some AA batteries quickly - everything else be damned!

The screen backlight (white?) is very bright, no way to dim/switch off - it illuminates the whole room! I made a "flap" over it to block it. Do the newer revisions done anything about it?

I have the Lidl one now, works very well, just plug in and charge. The screen is not back-lit at all but it does have LEDs to show status.

That charger isn't in the same league as the "good" chargers. Not saying it's in the same bracket as those crap duracell/energizer 1 hour chatgers etc either.

I've been using this for the past 2 years....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Technoline-BL-700-Intelligent-battery-charger/dp/B003S4JQS2

It's the best charger available in it's price range and that's according to battery charging entheusiasts everywhere. It's rebadged under different brands and looks quite similar to this one so could be the same one with a different case, anyone know?
Thanks

I also have the BL700 and I think the Maha unit is different and IIRC has some better features. I'd go for the Maha at this price, but both are top units.
Hot deal, but I doubt it will get much heat here... now if it was a computer game or some junk food then maybe!

As far as I know inserting batteries and leaving will just trigger a normal charge process, not sure how long that is though. The slower the better or so I'm told. With regards to the backlight, yes, it's still very bright and you can't turn it off. Not really an issue for me though.

Agree about the Technoline but it's not without it's problems, lack of backlight being one. The other is if you are charging loads of batteries (say before a trip) so doing them all on independent channels, sometimes when you remove a full one to put a flat one in, it will reset all the other ones so you lose all progress in terms of discharge/charge cycles. :(

I rang Maplin customer service and they charge £10 for shop transfers.
(seen it in original post now)

All other stores do it for free like tesco and argos.
cuts out the saving when compared to amazon. :(

Not sure if it's this one but one defaults the aaa's to top current.

My bad, it's the Maha c800 I'm thinking of that defaults to 1000ma.
