If you are travelling from Manchester to London and like to book early, some fares for peak as well as non peak hours are available from £15 each way. First class fares are available from £70-80.
The fares seem to have increased from what they were last year by a good 20%(do fares ever increase as per inflation!!!) but still are reasonable if you get them at this price.

The off peak London to Birmingham 2pm weekday fares seem to have doubled.
used to be £10 then £12 but no chance of same day return
I would certainly recommend a read of Tom Bower's book on Branson. It is the rail franchises keeping him and his life as a tax exile on Necker going.

Which explains why my Virgin Trains fare has doubled this year!
