Whilst looking for a soldering iron to do a repair, I came across this. I expect the quality isn't too good, but a it's good selection of tools for literally a few pence which I expect will be fine for the ocassional DIY job like a plug re-wire, fixing kids toys or for the more ambitious, complete construction of a new traditionally built dwelling. ( I jest)

It would generally cost more to buy a soldering iron & multi-meter and both these are included in this kit.

Description from web-site is below including a full list of tools included, ironically despite being labelled a 'students kit' its fair to say that most are under 18, but this can't be sold to minors under the Offensive Weapons Act.

* Ideal for electronic courses at schools and colleges as well as for the DIYer
* Includes 40W soldering iron, multimeter, voltage tester wire strippers, adjustable wrench and pliers
* Also includes screwdrivers, precision screwdrivers, knife, saw, tweezers, hex key and socket set supplied in a storage case
* Multimeter requires a 9V PP3 battery (Order Code: L46AL, not included)

Please note that, under the Offensive Weapons Act 1996, this product cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18.

Contents:
4 x slotted screwdrivers: 3mm x 50mm, 5mm x 100mm, 3mm x 150mm and 6mm x 150mm,
3 x crosspoint screwdrivers: 3mm x 50mm, 3mm x 150mm and 5mm x 150mm
1 x voltage tester
1 x -inch nut spinner
1 x tweezers
1 x knife
1 x saw
1 x pocket saw
1 x 40W soldering iron
1 x diagonal cutting pliers
1 x long nose pliers
1 x 6-inch adjustable wrench
1 x wire stripper
8 x hex keys
6 x precision screwdrivers
1 x mulitmeter
8 x drive socket
1 x plastic storage case

Can anyone tell me the size of the hex keys? Need small ones.
Also are they metric?

Yup, The irony being that it's labelled as a students kit.

I remember buying fishing knives & air gun pellets as a kid without too much difficulty, although I did have a 'blue shaving tint' in my early teens. Unfortunately, the ageing logic has continued and my grey hairs have set in early too.

I am guessing that the hex keys are metric as the rest of the kit is sized as such. The hex keys appear to be in the silver tool to the left of the multimeter on the pic, they look quite small, I'm guessing but the following sizes seem pretty standard for cheap sets...

1.5 / 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 5.5 & 6mm .. and they do look about that size relative to the other tools that are sized in the description.

Of course, that's just a guess so I cant be sure. Hmm, in retrospect, why did I write this, as it's of no use at all. Oh well, off for a beer.

I know what you mean! You have to be over 18 to buy a Gillette fusion shaver. I started shaving at 16. . . . world gone mad!

Maybe someone got soldered to death once . . . . !

Anyone know where you can get those hacksaw blade handles on their own?

Never buy tools from Maplins - They are possibly the most Mickey Mouse things Iv ever seen. Brought a set of drill bits - they all bent and snapped. Great job- there cheap for a reason

Indeed. Soldering is not difficult with the right equipment - but it can be a pain with a cheap iron or the wrong kind of solder (1mm Pb60Sn38Cu2 with flux just rocks).

So if you are serious, please get a decent one with temperature control (350 - 400 degrees work well). A used Weller is affordable and will last forever.

Nice solder tip - thanks!

Hmm,

the "check store" button has disappeared from the web-page. A few of these were scattered around Scotland when I checked earlier, (for those 14years old and over ;) ) quite a lot in Glasgow from recollection. Not sure how to check the stock now though but unless the stores were open until quite recently tonight I am guessing they are still available in-store.

Pah, you youngsters don't know you're born !!
Some of us grew up with solder containing real lead, and acid flux that had to be cleaned off with real solvents. The smells were lovely ...umm probably. Did me no harm ... twitch twitch sniff

Can anyone confirm if these are still instore ? Quite a lot still in Glasgow at 8.00pm last night according to online stock check, but would need to call stores now as the stock check button has disappreared.

I can't call as I'm out & about all day today.

Do they send out 'net sales from instore or from a central warehouse?

It gets even sadder when people over 18 are refused to be allowed to buy stuff like this because they have children with them since they could be buying it for the children ... lots of reported cases of this with alcohol etc in supermarkets

I just managed to check stock local to me, still 12 in stock in Glasgow central and 1 in Cumbernauld, according to online check at 20:55 24-01-11

Also random postcodes from down south still show these scattered about & in stock. Product code is N81HW - Student Tool Kit

I'll try to figure out how to post a link to the stock checker, I managed as I still have a link from the page I had left opened from yesterday.
