It doesn't matter whether you take the 20% off first or the 3 for 2, you get the same result [multiplication in commutative, as we all remember from primary school].

Items at £10, £9, £8:

3 for 3 gives £10 + £9 [+ 0] = £19

Less 20% [-£3.80] gives £15.20

Take the 20% off first, you get the prices at £8.00, £7.20 and £6.40.

3 for 2 gives the £6.40 one free, leaving you to pay £8.00 + £7.20 = £15.20 QED

Although your logic is correct, you might want to re-read the original post as this is not what the OP actually is saying....

£10 + 9 + 8 = £27 (items total)
Less 20% (£5.40) = £21.60

£21.60 - £8 (cheapest item free) = £13.60

I *think* he means they take the total price of the items (10 + 9 + 8) and calculate 20% discount of that price
price of items: £27
20% discount = -£5.40
3 for 2 discount = -£8.00

A real example:
The Flying Scotsman Train Set - Marks & Spencer £129.00 - Quantity: 3
Items:£387.00
Delivery charges: £3.503
for 2 Christmas:-£129.00
20% Spectacular:-£77.40
Order Total: £184.10

price of items: £27
20% discount = -£5.40
3 for 2 discount = -£8.00

The misunderstanding comes from the fact that he's assuming that the lower priced item (i.e. 6.40) is free; however what is actually happening is that the 20% is being deducted first and then the lower priced item(s) are being deducted at full price. Easy example:

3 items - £10 + £10 +£10
20% off = £6
Less 3 for 2 = £10 (not £6(£10 less 20%))
= £14

Effectively less than half price.

Ordered Pressies for my aunt mum and sister today before I saw this.. I kept double checking the prices as it was ending up so cheap! I still don't get how they worked out my 3 for 2 offers though, i bought 12 items, 4 of the cheapest should have been free working out at £17.50 off.. however they deducted £25.50 ! and then the 20% on top of that saved about £50 overall, think I'll be going back for more its addictive =D
#20
How our 3 for 2 works for you

Choose anything, at any price, from any range in our Christmas 3 for 2
and you'll get every third item free!

Most 3 for 2s work by giving you the cheapest products free. With ours, you get every third product free, in descending price order. This means that if you buy nine gifts, the ones you get free are the third, sixth and ninth most expensive, not the three cheapest.

Mine went through at the check out but didn't show when i looked at my basket but i am already registered with an account. I bought wine and chocs on the 3 for 2 and that went through with the 20% discount code and also went back on for a hairdryer and that too went through with discount.

 Thanks, got loads of xmas pressies..............just hope I actually receive the items as I heard M&S are bad for items no longer being in stock after you've ordered.
Great deal I got, less than 1/2 price.

You saved on this order!

tingly,
It doesn't show you totals/discounts etc until you put in payment details but you then have to confirm (or cancel/change) on the next screen, so don't worry about putting in payment details cause you will get a breakdown of discounts and total cost before confirming. I had food gifts (pasta set and others) and still got full discounts.
#35
Cheers for this, just had a very constructive afternoon at work!
#36
no 20% isn't on food.it is on the wine in the deal but price had already been reduced for the wine on my receipt.

lol I just saw an accident happen on the M77 because of the sheer weight of traffic of people trying to get into the M&S at Silverburn, Glasgow. Who says the Scots can't resist a bargain???
