Here's one for fellow MSE'rs! Received this email this morning for one of Martin's books free, +£2.95 P&P. I've 'bought' something from these people before, and it arrived after about 3 weeks, so while it's a bit slow they were reliable. I had this book (and then sold it on Ebay for a fiver) and although quite a bit of it is common sense, and almost all of it can be found on MSE, it was still an interesting read and would make a great gift for anyone skint without internet! Still £5.99 on Play & Amazon.

They're also selling his other books at good prices, so if they're not going to add extra P&P on then it might be worth getting the 3 from them if you want the set.

martins saved me loads over the years i would be saving even more if i'd followed some morgage advice he gave on his site a few years back about a 10 yr fixed rate of less than 4.5%!! but i spoke to my morgage advisor and he said not to take such a long term as rates might fall further.......he's no longer me morgage advisor!!:x

martin i owe u drink or 3

I'm all for moneysaving but some of the products MSE suggest are just plain ***** and just end up being a false economy.

I agree, Lewis must be coining it in. He seems to be on GMTV every single morning!
#11
He makes in excess of £500,000 a month from his website (approx)

He is a "moneyMAKINGexpert" !
#12
what are the three most important lessons I have never been taught?

Is the book worth buying?
#13
It's not great! Nothing new to learn that isn't already on the site + common sense.

He's really annoying - are people that stupid that they don't already know how to budget or be a rate tart or any of the kinda stuff he talks about... People must be really dumb!

I thought all the 'go to deal' links on this site went through a referral process, where such a scheme exists (i.e. amazon)?

No one can write a book that is specific to the needs of one person.

The entire purpose of a book is to inspire thought.

You have read the comments on his site - and it inspired you to consider the details and realise they are unviable for you. But others might work well. Its the same with deals here.

Yes that does happen which is why the mods suddenly post a "Deal"
#18
wonder how many pages in the book are lifted from the MSE forum he exerts copyright over?

The product is £5.99 at Amazon - without postage - and £5.67 delivered at base.com, so voted HOT.

There seems to be a fair amount of rather unfair Lewis-bashing on this thread. He's all over the papers, radio and tv at the moment because people are finally learning what we here have known for years - play the system, don't let it play you. He's created a useful website that for many is a very useful comfort blanket.

The majority of material published on his newsletter comes from posters to the forums, much of which is seen on HotUKDeals. Why shouldn't he republish this material?
As for: "his website generates profit for him unlike this site" - have you ever clicked "Go To Deal"? :-D

my comment meaning; why not read the forum for free? unless you are a Martin Lewis fanboy I can't see the point in parting with cash for a printed copy of the MSE forum best bits

Hit the nail on the head there.
Most people nowadays don't have a clue how to manage their money
It's a case of whack it on the credit card and forget about it
A lot of managing your money is common sense.

If Martin is making a lot of money now, then good luck to him.
His site is great and there's a mine of useful information on there.
#23
He was on TalkSport radio the other day.

People need to lighten up, both sites are saving us money where is the problem with that? He can do what he likes as long as I am saving money.
#24
"Martin Lewis fans"...what?

I'm all for people liking him and saving money using his good advice - but do money saving experts really have loyal devotees/ fan bases?

ebay is the best site of all - saves me money by selling on everything! lol

ML also has a regular slot booked on Radio 2 on the Jeremy Vine show(once a week I think), one hell of a busy fella!
#27
People don't seem to realise the enourmity of Martin's Money saving tips....they range from small freebies to taking on the Banks......whoever you are, I can guarentee he could save you money in one area/aspect of your life.
#28
How dare he make money. Now that I know, I'm never going to go to his site and save money ever again. That'll teach him.
#29
Why the hate? The man can be annoying, but his site has saved me loads with it's advice and articles. I especially like the international call checker tool - it's a lifesaver. The stuff he puts in his books are usually stuff derived from the forums anyway so they are tried and tested ways of saving money.

Yep, Martin's site and advice as well as all the helpful people who contribute to the MSE fora have saved me thousands of pounds through news alerts, articles & guidance as well as direct replies to questioning. Did people forget about mortgage & saving accounts advice and reclaiming unfair bank charges and wrong council tax banding? This is not mentioning the CallChecker, Grabit board and savings I have made on my utility bills...... etc. Yes a good deal of the advice is available elsewhere as mentioned before but good luck to those who want to go trawling the net to try and chase every single bit of it. Credit should be given to the guy and all the best to him in collecting his fortune as he helps others like me make more savings. For those who are jealous, I am sure their rant (more like a barking dog) will continue.

people complaining about how much money martin makes, answer this?

should he keep the site which generates in excess of 5m visitors a month, up by using his own funds ?
its expensive to keep a huge website up to date and he has people constanly updating the site on a daily basis, they have to be paid also

he does not have adverts and doesn't hide how he makes money on his website
e.g.

This site has a strict ethical financial stance; it has no adverts and is completely free to use. You can't pay to have anything put on the site. Things are only included if they're the best way to save money based on specialised journalistic research.

Income is generated from links that generate revenue when clicked. Once articles are finished, where possible 'affiliated links' to the top products are used and have a * by them. Yet if no affiliate link is available a non-paying link is used; i.e. if the top product doesn't pay, it remains the top product regardless; financial considerations don't play a role.
This stance means the top products detailed here often easily surpass those on the other money websites, because these sites are fully commercial. Yet thankfully the sheer scale of MoneySavingExpert.com means it's very healthily in profit and also donates a good chunk of cash to the MoneySavingExpert.com Charitable Fund.

name another site that makes money that delivers millions to charity every year

the end story is he makes money, he needs to keep the site going but he is GETTING YOU MONEY you didnt have before.

martin is a saviour to people as using his tips could save you thousands a year

ML has saved me and my family a fortune over the last few years.
A lot of posts on this forum come from MSE or PTS and they also get the same from this great forum.
ML's personal worth is his own business. All I know is that we are all on these specific forums for a reason, to save money!
Why slate someone who is helping us all.
Just because these forums are sucessful, we should all be happy.

Dealing with the offer of this book at £2.95, not for me thank you, hardly money saving if you ask me when you can get most of the information from here, MSE and PTS.

So not for me thank you, but im sure the plug on here will go a long way to lining ML'S pockets.

Can't see anyone forcing people to buy this book. It is just a good price only if you are willing to purchase such a book. Again if ML can make some money from selling good and concise advice then all the best to him or would you want him to publish it from his own pocket for people to get it for free?
#37
I despise the bloke...he treats everyone like thick stupid schoolchildren who cannot think for themselves.
...such an antagonising bloke - if i saw him id probably punch his lights out.

All the things he comes up with ive done already....its uncanny - he hasnt saved me a single penny over the years and i cant see him saving me a penny in future either.

He only really appeals to lazy people who cannot think for themselves and dont have the gumption to use the internet to save themselves money already.
#38
So should we stop posting deals for cheap Virgin stuff, just because Richard Branson is already rich?! Or advertising CDs/DVDs because the artists/actors already have enough money, so we shouldn't buy them?

As I said in the original post, the info in this book IS available free on MSE, but not everyone has internet access, so it could given as a gift. Or it could be handy for people who actually like to switch off their computers for a little while and read books. This book is a concise collection of tips without having to wade through hundreds of pages of forums.

If you don't want to buy it, don't! If you don't like the MSE site, don't use it, but please don't slate those of us who do!

But that's how it works. You don't have to post on his site.
Go off and build your own route to the GMTV sofa.
