yebbut the blue ones are better than the grey ones at work. Being blue, the wavelength's shorter - so the packets go faster. Also, did you know you can speed up your broadband by using shorter cables. :whistling:

Ah I've heard about these blue broadband cables, they protect you from hacking, spyware and viruses I think.....

for a 3mtr Cat5 this is a decent price if you need one.

lmfao very true!!!

I've seen these things in Maplins they suck for price. I could get some cable, cable guides and plugs to make an ethernet cable myself for much cheaper than Maplins!

That's actually true - if you're talking about the RJ-11 connection to your phone line - the shorter the cable, the faster the speed you will connect at.

Must have been having a sale!!!! I once saw a 15m ethernet cable with an opened package marked up to more than the original unopened one was

There's veeeeery little difference in it. Nothing you'd really notice. When there are a few thousand feet of copper inbetween you and the exchange another foot of cable isn't going to do much.

If you want to be pedantic, at least get it right, this is Cat 5e, above Cat 5, plus Cat 5e supports gigabit, just as Cat 6 does.

Add that to the fact most people don't have a gigabit router, then this is perfectly adequate for standard 100 meg connections.

Unless it's very badly shielded you'll usually be able to run gigabit on Cat5 as well :) A lot of stuff sold as Cat5 is actually made with Cat6 cable.

You're not taking into account how much more bandwidth BTs copper cables can carry.

I connected a 30m extension from the master socket, and connected at 400kb/s ish.

With a 1m cable I got (and am currently getting) 6144kb/s.

Your 30m extension must either be damaged or of a very poor quality. The cable BT uses isn't some super duper high bandwidth cable either. Everyone has an individual cable that runs from the exchange to them or from the streetside cabinet to the and it's not really all that much different from the cable you'd use in your home. You're a prime candidate for a Monster Cable deal ;)
