Masterplug Surge Protected Power Block (4 socket, 2m lead) in black £1.00 @ Sainsburys
Picked up a couple of these from my local Sainsburys this morning. Especially like the black as it matches our sockets at home.

They may have had some shockingly bad advice
If you value your tv or pc or other expensive electrical equipment I'd say get them but like me who doesnt like the thought of having a surge and getting my pc fried like I've had before then these are cheap and yes the insurance does work!
Most people dont care about their stuff these days in our throwaway society, £1 isnt lost if these work :)
I have, lost my computer - motherboard and PSU where totally fried. This was about 10 years ago now though and I've been using surge protection since then.
yes, i have had a power surge at a cottage i lived in once that took out the power on my Television and a video recorder (remember them)...Any electrical item is vulnerable, dont forget that resistors and capacitors all have a value that they can work up to, a big power spike usually rips through that..

2nd that. Probably don't hear of it too much these days as a lot of people use surge protectors! lol
Note, HomePlug networking devices do not work if plugged into a surge-protected circuits.
most electrical items have built in protection but i guess if this wasnt working properly then at lest you have this strip as a back up - then again these strips may only work once and unless there is an indicator on the strip then you wont know if its still working - line conditioners are better but they arent cheap

Wrong they do, i have several connected this way and they work faultlessly - i suspect there may be some degradation though - manufacturers are just covering themselves
what do you mean ion out the lumps (spikes?) - thats what a line conditioner does, surge protectors do not iron out spikes

i use a ups - due to all the kit ive got it only lasts about 2 mins but at least it protects the kit and importantly cleanly shuts down the pc
